Job Description

Position Summary Utilizes working knowledge of instruments and procedures in Histology to process, embed, cut, coverslip, and stain histology specimens with speed and accuracy. Prepares frozen sections and marrow aspirations and performs immunochemical and other special staining procedures. Keeps abreast of advancements made in Histology. Processes specimens from geriatric, adult, children, adolescent and neonate patients. Reflects the current legal, ethical and professional judgements about the quality of work being performed. Education Associates - Preferred Experience None Required License & Certification National Certification - Required Registered Histotechnician HT(ASCP) or equivalent. Core Job Functions Organizes and processes specimens according to guidelines to ensure proper sealing of the tissue. Prepares frozen sections and bone marrows for examination by the pathologist. Performs quality immunochemical staining, using manual or automated methods. Recognizes unexpected results and problems with patient specimens. Assists in training new co-workers. Adheres to regulations regarding safe handling of hazardous materials such as Exposure Control and Chemical Hygiene Plans. Maintains a clean work area to diminish the possibility of contamination. Corrective and preventative maintenance, instrument function checks and basic troubleshooting are performed and recorded per department policy. Performs basic troubleshooting on equipment and documents troubleshooting. Communicates with supervisor about inoperable equipment. Embeds specimens to demonstrate margins, full surfaces, lumens and other areas necessary for viewing by the pathologists. Cuts specimens 4-5 microns thick that are free of artifacts, wrinkles and tears. Applies cover glasses of the appropriate size to ensure proper sealing of the tissue. Ascertains that slides are free of fingerprints air bubbles and any other debris that might affect the clarity of the specimen.
