Histology Technician
II - MCCRP

HJF is seeking a Histology Technician II responsible for providing histology, laboratory and research support to the Murtha Cancer Center Research Project (MCCRP)/Clinical Breast Care Project (CBCP) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MCCRP..This position will be in support of the John P. Murtha Cancer Center located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, in Bethesda, Maryland. The Murtha Cancer Center is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoW Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Due to clearance requirements, this position may require U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Security Clearance.

Processes research blood samples (serum, plasma, RNA) in support of all protocols within the project.

Provides clinical support to the Department of Pathology Anatomic Laboratory (DPALs) as needed and with approval from the MCCRP director. Performs histological duties of clinical samples including standard tissue processing, paraffin embedding, microtomy, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and cover slipping following standard operating procedures.

Maintains a safe work environment following approved safety practice in the work area including removal of all chemical waste.

Prepares research tissue for microscopic examination which includes slide labeling, microtomy, staining.

Assists pathologist and/or pathologists' assistant in the procurement and archiving of tissue samples.

Research and documents pertinent clinical history for consented patients.

Monitors OR, breast clinic, prostate clinic, and imaging schedules to track patient enrollment.

Maintains organization of research materials, including files, slides and tissue blocks.

Ensures accurate specimen entry into the database, tracks all specimens, and resolves discrepancies as needed.

Prepares and ships frozen specimens to an offsite storage facility.

Maintains accurate records; tabulates and organizes data.

Assists with data collection as needed.

Attend meetings with the Breast Center and Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) staff to resolve problems, make recommendations and maintain close and positive working relationships.

Sees that equipment is in good working order or is repaired as needed and supplies are reordered as necessary.

Maintain records and perform light administrative duties as assigned.

Assist with special projects as assigned.
