In this vital role, you will be responsible for preparing and processing tissue specimens for microscopic examination, supporting diagnostic and research activities. The ideal candidate will possess strong laboratory skills, a thorough understanding of histological techniques, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and safety. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to advancing medical knowledge and patient care through meticulous specimen handling and preparation. Responsibilities Performs routine histology techniques on surgical, autopsy, research, and neuropathology tissue under limited supervision following standardized procedures. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instruments and equipment used for tissue analysis. Cuts surgical, autopsy, research, and neuropathology tissue using a rotary microtome. Embeds surgical, autopsy, research, and neuropathology tissue specimens. Stains, coverslips, and labels tissue samples accurately and efficiently. Performs special stains under supervision according to established laboratory procedures. Mixes, prepares, and maintains stains, reagents, solutions, and special fixatives. Maintains laboratory equipment and ensures proper instrument functionality. Records and maintains QC, QA, CAP, and instrument maintenance documentation. Monitors and maintains inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies. Adheres to Standard Work procedures and reports deviations for corrective action. Participates in quality improvement initiatives and data collection activities. Assists with onboarding and training by demonstrating work processes when needed. Performs additional related duties as assigned or requested.
Skills required:
4-5 years of relevant histology/laboratory experience required. Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree required. HT (Histotechnician) or HTL (Histotechnologist) certification required. Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required. Strong near vision acuity with the ability to clearly see details at 20 inches or less. Excellent depth perception to accurately judge distances and spatial relationships. Ability to adjust visual focus quickly and accurately for detailed laboratory work. Strong color vision skills with the ability to distinguish and identify colors required for job functions.
Required Certification:
Associate's Degree with coursework in Anatomy, Biology, and/or Chemistry required; OR Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biology required; OR High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of two years of relevant laboratory experience in a work, academic, or volunteer setting required. International coursework must be evaluated and verified by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service. HT (ASCP) certification preferred. State License(s): BLS, HT (Histotechnician) or HTL (Histotechnologist) certification required.
