Job Description

Job Summary:
Accessions and prepares microbiology, histology, or cytology specimens by plating microbiology specimens to the correct media for optimal growth, prepares and stains smears, performs moderate complexity procedures under supervision, collects and handles blood specimens, and other duties as assigned. Assists pathologists with various procedures, if trained and necessary. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served; also demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed.
Performance Expectations:
Performance expectations will be covered in the orientation and preceptor phase of your orientation to your job. Demonstrate the ability to use various computer programs in addition to the EMR system Demonstrate the ability to multitask within and between laboratory sections Demonstrate the ability to perform various methods of specimen collection (i.e. venipuncture, skin puncture) Demonstrate the ability to correctly enter orders through multiple workflows (i.e. outpatient, requisition entry). Demonstrate the ability to correctly package and ship diagnostic specimens. Demonstrate the ability to receive specimens into the laboratory and dispatch to the appropriate section. Demonstrate the ability to maintain a safe and clean environment within the clinical area in accordance with established standards and regulations. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with others in an appropriate and timely manner. Adheres to and promotes established values of the organization, i.e. customer service, safety, infection control, and compliance standards. Demonstrate consistency in following FGH policy, procedures, and standards of care in performing all duties. Demonstrate participation in department meetings and education/training and meets the established deadlines for completion. Specific Performance Expectations per
Department:
Microbiology Demonstrate the ability to perform microbiology culture setup, rapid tests and other CLIA waved or moderately complex procedures under supervision. Demonstrate the ability to call critical results and recollects and document correctly in EMR. Demonstrate the ability to prepare Gram stains and AFB stains. Demonstrate the ability to perform QC procedures for rapid tests and update new lot numbers in
EMR Pathology:
Demonstrate the ability to perform grossing techniques for processing Pathology specimens. Demonstrate the ability to assist Cytologists in procedures, such as EBUS and EUS. Demonstrate the ability to assist Pathologists in procedures, when requested.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills High school graduate or G.E.D. required. A.S. or B.S. preferred.
Work Experience:
None required. Working knowledge of Microbiology and/or Pathology procedures preferred. Phlebotomy experience preferred. Certification/Licensure-DUE
