Job Summary:
The Histotechnologist is responsible for preparing tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation and diagnosis. This role involves performing technical procedures to create high-quality slide preparations while operating and maintaining laboratory equipment with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Validates specimen identification, sample type, and size, ensuring proper prioritization and adherence to established handling protocols and turnaround times. Processes specimens using tissue processors, selecting appropriate solutions and programs based on specimen requirements. Embeds tissues and performs microtomy, producing high-quality sections and slides while maintaining quality standards. Performs routine and special staining procedures, including AFB, Mucicarmine (MSN), Gram, and Oil Red O stains, to demonstrate specific tissue elements and microorganisms. Prioritizes and multitasks staining procedures to optimize workflow and ensure timely processing. Coverslips, labels, and distributes slides promptly for pathologist interpretation. Assists with liver biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and retrieval of fresh specimens from the main lab, cryostat lab, NGI suite, CT suite, and Electron Microscopy. Performs laboratory inquiry functions, including technical review, specimen tracking, result verification, and troubleshooting of processing issues. Maintains compliance with departmental procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements to support accurate and timely diagnostic results.
Requirements:
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of Histology experience.
Certifications:
BLS (AHA only) & ASCP (HT or HTL). Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability to follow lab protocols and communicate effectively. Basic computer proficiency. #
