About this Opportunity Reporting to the Medical Director, Dermatologic Surgery, UWMC, and the Vice Chair for Finance & Administration for Dermatology, the Histotechnologist performs specialized histologic procedures and frozen section processing in a clinical setting under the direction of the Mohs Surgeon. This role supports the Department of Dermatology's mission of providing exceptional patient care, advancing dermatologic research, and training future leaders in the field through partnerships with leading regional healthcare institutions. The position requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced clinical environment. Key Responsibilities Histologic Processing & Staining (35%): Process, embed, section, and stain tissue specimens for examination by the Mohs surgeon Perform and optimize advanced histological staining techniques critical for Mohs surgery, including Silver stain, Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E), Toluidine Blue, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining methods Clinical Collaboration & Specimen Management (15%): Collaborate with the Mohs surgeon and surgical teams to ensure timely processing and evaluation of specimens Assess improperly handled specimens, determine appropriate disposition, take corrective action, and communicate issues and resolutions to the supervisor Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance (15%): Implement, monitor, and perform quality control and quality assurance of specimens in accordance with CLIA and Washington State Department of Health requirements Develop and refine histological methodologies, including preparation of specialized reagents, dyes, and solutions, while ensuring quality control of reagent performance Laboratory Operations & Equipment Maintenance (20%): Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, including cryostats and stain processors, in partnership with UW Medicine Scientific Instruments Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions, determine root causes, implement corrective actions, and monitor outcomes Evaluate new laboratory products and instrumentation for potential implementation Training & Technical Support (10%): Provide guidance, instruction, and orientation to pathologists, residents, and other laboratory staff on complex histologic procedures Other Duties as Assigned (5%): Perform related duties as required Required Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, your application must demonstrate that you meet both the minimum and additional qualifications listed below.
