Job Description

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in a community-based home. The DSP provides assistance to individuals in establishing relationships in the community through the planning and participation in community based events, personal care as needed, household maintenance, financial management, shopping and meal preparation.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Excellent interpersonal & communication skills Ability to exercise patience, caring and concern in new and sometimes stressful situations Acceptable criminal background check Be able to pass the training requirements of Maryland Neighborly Networks Inc. Experience working with adults in a care-giving setting is a plus Valid Driver license with a good driving record a plus
Responsibilities:
Work to create a strong, positive relationship with the individual(s). Must demonstrate responsibility, good judgement, enthusiasm and flexibility. Implement each individual's Person Centered, Behavioral and Nursing Care Plans. Complete necessary paperwork and documentation during your shift; daily service notes, incident reports, behavior data, etc. Record data as required. Monitor the person being supported to ensure safety in all aspects of their lives (medical, health, behavioral). Must obtain CMT certification to be qualified to administer medication as needed. Promote community inclusion, self-determination and self-sufficiency in those being supported through personal interactions. Ensure that the rights and dignity of the supported individual are respected. Assist with household duties that relate to the individuals and/or the household. Assure that any funds assigned during the shift are managed effectively. Attend meetings and trainings as required. Work cooperatively with other staff members in the home. Assist with ensuring that both interior and exterior of the home is maintained in a clean attractive manner. Drive personal vehicles to transport supported individuals to activities and doctor appointments.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms and be able to go up and down stairs. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision. The employee must be able to effectively complete a non-adverse physical intervention with individuals of varied heights and weights and levels of physical strength according to the guidelines presented in behavioral principles and strategies training. In some cases, the ability to lift and transfer may be required.
