High School graduate or GED preferred. Certified as a Personal Care Aide (PCA) through completion of an approved NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) or NYS Education Department (NYSED) training program or through an approved NYSDOH competency testing curriculum. Prior experience in homecare, caregiving or a related setting preferred. Demonstrated ability to approach clients with compassion, empathy and respect for their individuality and cultural background. Able to read and write, understand and follow written and verbal direction and instructions, record messages and keep simple records. Ability to follow care plans and adapt to the changing needs of the clients. Communicates effectively with clients, families, Stafkings and other team members. Must undergo a criminal history record check as required by NYS Department of Health Rules and Regulations governing Licensed Home Care Services Agencies (LHCSAs). Competency/Skill Requirements:
Experience providing care for individuals in a homecare or related setting preferred. Demonstrates positive interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Maintains confidentiality, remains open to others' ideas and exhibits willingness to learn. Adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change or unexpected events. Ability to work cooperatively and get along with others. Exhibits dependability and is consistently at work and on time, follows instructions, responds to management direction and solicits feedback to improve performance. Complies with and agrees to uphold Stafkings Healthcare Systems' "Code of Conduct". Working Environment:
Travel as required within the community, client homes, and facilities such as doctor offices, hospitals, dialysis centers, emergency rooms, etc. as necessary in order to be with the client. Must be able to walk, sit, stand, reach or stretch for various lengths of time as associated with working and traveling within the community and to clients' homes. Ability to perform tasks that involve physical demands such as lifting, bending and assisting clients with mobility. In-home lifting requires up to 50 lbs. independently and up to 325 pounds utilizing an assisted device. Potential travel in inclement weather. Position Summary:
The Personal Care Aide (PCA) is responsible for providing personal care and assisting the clients with various daily living activities to ensure their comfort, safety, and well-being within their home. The PCA will follow a care plan which has been individually designed to support the client in their home environment. The exact duties will vary depending on the needs of the client. This assistance could include help with dressing, toileting and incontinence care, bathing or light housekeeping. Chores could include laundry, changing sheets, meal preparation, general cleaning, errands or accompanying client to doctor's appointments. Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Provides for the personal care needs of the client as designated on the client's care plan and within the Personal Care Aide (PCA) Scope of Practice (e.g., assists the client with bathing, toileting, incontinence care, getting dressed, eating, performing oral hygiene care, hair care or other personal hygiene care) as per their care plan. Assists clients with mobility support (e.g., help the client get in and out of bed, assist with walking, including the use of canes, walkers and/or wheelchairs) using appropriate techniques as required. Assists clients with self-administration of medications by providing reminders, prompting and cueing as needed. Performs household duties (e.g., light housekeeping, laundry, make and change beds, preparing meals, grocery shopping and routine errands as per client's care plan. Maintains a safe and clean home environment for the client. Monitors and ensures the safety of the client at all times. Follows safety protocols and infection control measures. Utilizes equipment, personal protective equipment (face masks, eye protection, gloves, protective gowns, shoe covers) and other supplies appropriately. Documents services completed on appropriate forms and electronically in accordance with Stafkings policies and procedures. Records and reports changes in the client's physical condition, behavior or appearance to Stafkings supervising RN in a timely manner. Reports changes in the client's home environment/safety issues (e.g., loose floor tile or frayed lamp cord) to their Stafkings' office in a timely manner. Submits completed documentation to Stafkings within established time parameters. Takes initiative in performance of assigned work requiring minimal supervision. Provides quality services as demonstrated by thoroughness in completion of assigned tasks. Completes a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing education/in-services each year. Maintains compliance with all employment and health requirements. Completes an annual skills assessment. Works as a team player and provides a pleasant environment to clients in their home. Protects client information and only releases information to the permitted parties as per Stafkings policies and procedures. Demonstrates a high degree of commitment to customer service.
