Direct Support Professional Requirements and Qualifications A Direct Support Professional is a person who assists an individual with a disability to lead a self-directed life, contribute to the community, assists with activities of daily living if needed, and encourages attitudes and behaviors that enhance community inclusion. This position is for a Day Center, Nemo's Reef, and may act as an advocate for a consumer in communicating their needs, self-expression, and goals.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid driver's license
- Pass a state background check
- Comfortable working independently and can consistently make good judgements that benefit the client
- Flexible, with an ability to handle stress
- Friendly disposition with a positive attitude
- Quickly manage stressful situations responsibly and effectively
- Strong interpersonal skills and passionate about helping those in need
- Ability to move and stand for prolonged periods of time
- Frequently perform physically demanding tasks
- Ability to lift 50lbs
Preferred Candidates:
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Experience in a developmentally disabled field
- Experience tracking and recording information and documenting
Skills:
- Handwashing
- Ambulation with a gait belt
- Ambulation with a walker
- Intake and output monitoring
- Feeding a dependent individual
- Perineal care
- Proper positioning
- Range of motion
- Assistance in transferring to and from a wheelchair The Direct Support Professional requires the Ability to assist any individual who is dependent on care and acknowledge they may come in contact with urine, bowel movements, vomit, and possibly bodily fluids all while using proper PPE when assisting individuals with their dependent needs.
