Full-time Job Title:
DSP Job Synopsis:
The DSP works to implement a Medicaid-licensed Day Supports program for individuals with Developmental Disabilities. This position is unique in that the work assignment changes daily via providing support in all program areas during staff absences. The DSP assists with implementing Individual Support Plans for each individual. The DSP position has the responsibility to work with the Activities Coordinator and other staff as a team to carry out interesting, fun, and innovative programs and activities. The Arc of Central Virginia's goal is to treat each individual with dignity and respect and to provide choice and person-centered planning. The DSP plays a key role in ensuring the success of the program.
Job Responsibilities:
1. To become familiar with the needs and interests of all individuals served and perform activities based on ISP during staff absences. 2. To coordinate activities and plans with the Program Manager to ensure the best possible programs for individuals. 3. To work directly with individuals during their regular program hours to offer guidance, support, and encouragement. This includes support to participants of both the Day Support and Community Engagement Programs. 4. To work with individuals on daily living skills, social skills, and other areas where support is needed to fully participate in the Day Support and Community Engagement programs. 5. To work with individuals on behavioral issues and to work with other staff, as a team, to collectively and jointly minimize or manage challenging behaviors with a person-centered approach. 6. To transport (accompany) individuals to activity sites in a safe and timely manner. 7. To follow all guidelines for the care and use of The Arc's vehicles and equipment. 8. To collect and record ISP data, as required. 9. To follow all requirements and guidelines for a licensed day health and rehabilitation program as required by Medicaid and the State of Virginia as established by The Arc of Central Virginia's policy statements. 10. To maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date reports, as assigned and as required. 11. To attend meetings, staff in-service training, and other training as required. 12. To communicate regularly with the Program Manager on any issues and concerns relating to the individuals, staff, or anything of concern relating to the program. To fulfill other duties as assigned 13. To fulfill all duties and responsibilities in a professional, reliable, and effective manner.
Required Skills:
The DSP should have a thorough knowledge of intellectual and developmental disabilities. Knowledge of the following requirements for a Medicaid licensed day health and rehabilitation program, the development and implementation of ISP, strategies for dealing with behavioral issues; an understanding of the program planning process; and an understanding of how to tap into community resources are crucial. The DSP should be a good organizer and planner. Assignments vary daily for this position; therefore, it requires staffing that enjoys constant movement and change. It also requires constant communication with a wide variety of staff and program participants. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Computer skills in word processing are recommended. The DSP must be able to carry out the job responsibilities in a professional manner. An experienced driver with a valid Virginia license is required. Reliable transportation to The Arc or work site is required. Physical ability to assist individuals, as needed, is required. Physical assistance includes but is not limited to: Pushing wheelchairs, assisting individuals from seated to standing position, using assistive lift technology to reposition non-ambulatory individuals, assist individuals with ADLs as outlined in their person-centered plans. The ability and willingness to treat individuals with respect and dignity and to represent The Arc in a positive light in community settings are essential.
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Previous DSP experience preferred.
Accountability:
The DSP is directly accountable to the Program Manager.
