About the Role Are you passionate about supporting individuals with disabilities while promoting their independence and dignity? We are hiring a direct support professional to walk alongside a person with autism in learning, directing and encouraging in and practicing life skills—not doing for them, but doing with them. This is not traditional caregiving. Think of this as part teacher, part coach —helping someone grow, connect, and experience life fully while preserving their autonomy. Your job is to guide, engage, and uplift.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS
This position focuses on in-home support services for a client in our community. They live with a disability. Our caregivers make a meaningful difference in the lives of the client we serve every time they work a shift. We even offer a training program to get you started on how to be the best caregiver you can be if you've never worked in the field before
What You'll Do Model and Teach Life Skills:
Guide and direct the individual in daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, and organizing. Be a
Thoughtful Companion:
Talk with the person directly, engage in conversation with the person. Cellphone personal use while working will be strictly prohibited.
Encourage Exploration and Growth:
Support (through cheering on, modeling, direction, side by side, etc.) participation in experiences (whether existing or new experiences) like art projects, card games, puzzles, shopping, local outings, and exercise.
Foster Independence:
Empower when possible. Your job is to support, to encourage, to cheer on, to direct, to provide the routine and the flow of what is going on that day.
Create Meaningful Routines:
Help build a consistent daily structure that is educational, calming, and enriching.
Promote Community Integration:
Join the individual on walks, library visits, community events, or cafe outings—supporting community inclusion. Responsibilities Include but are not limited to : Provide Companionship through Activities Provide Transportation Support (such as activities or appointments) Assist with the Activities of Daily Living Provide Meal Plan/Prep Support Provide Support with Medication Support with
Housekeeping Who You Are A Natural Educator or Supporter:
You might be a paraprofessional, teacher's aide , coach, or caregiver who values hands-on learning.
Patient and Person-Centered:
You understand the importance of doing alongside a person.
Communicative and Respectful:
You speak to people with disabilities, not about them.
Reliable and Professional:
You're punctual, consistent, and comfortable balancing warmth with determination to get things done. Qualifications Experience in education, coaching or life coaching, behavioral support, or caregiving preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Both written and spoken English language proficiency required. Comfortable with light physical activity and community outings. You must be motivated to do things daily, you must be wanting to move, engage, and create. High school diploma or equivalent required; some college in social services or education a plus. A valid Washington State Driver's License, a reliable vehicle, up-to-date auto insurance, and must be willing to transport clients First Aid/CPR Certified (within 120 days of employment, training can be provided) FSLAC takes a ZERO tolerance stance on abuse and neglect.
