Job Description

This is a Medical Technician, GS-0645-05 position located in Central Alabama Veterans Health Care Services in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services. The primary purpose of this position is to perform blood collection procedures by venipuncture techniques and as the primary autopsy assistant.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/28/2026.
Time-In-Grade Requirement :
Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-4. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note:
Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR, SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE
You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ( COPY

OR, COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above, to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-5 level.

only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. (COPY

Physical Requirements:
The work will typically require a considerable amount of walking to and from the buildings of the medical center, including buildings on the outer perimeter of the medical center grounds, sometimes during inclement weather. The work also requires regular and recurrent standing to perform test, walking, reaching, bending and kneeling to obtain supplies and operation instruments. The work involves regular and recurrent exposure to moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions .. Occasionally lifts weights up to 75 pounds.
