Rita Rd, Suite 1500, Tucson, AZ 85747 USA Position Highlights The University of Arizona's Steward Observatory invites you to apply to the role of Research Specialist. The successful candidate will be involved in assembling and evaluating imaging sensors. The Research Specialist assists with the design, development, operation, calibration, and maintenance of sophisticated scientific instrumentation and complex laboratory equipment in support of research and instruction at Steward Observatory. Working under the guidance of senior staff, the position contributes technical and scientific expertise to research projects, including building, modifying, testing, and repairing one-of-a-kind mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems, as well as supporting grant and contract proposal preparation. The role also helps coordinate programs and projects while applying knowledge of university systems, departmental tools, and scientific research practices. Steward Observatory is both a century-old observatory on the University of Arizona campus and one of the University's oldest research units. Founded in 1918, the Observatory brings together students, staff, faculty, engineers, and technicians to explore the universe and share discoveries through world-class research, education, and outreach. With more than 180 professionals supporting advanced facilities, laboratories, and observatories, Steward Observatory offers a collaborative environment where technical expertise plays a critical role in advancing ground- and space-based astronomy. Duties & Responsibilities Assists under guidance in the fabrication of CCD and CMOS sensors utilizing flip-chip bonders, dispensing equipment, dicing saw, wire bonders, or stud bumping machines. Receives direction and guidance for wet-etching silicon using mechanical equipment. Provides assistance in the coordination of projects using technical and scientific expertise. With direction, basic programming and maintaining of laboratory equipment. Prepares supporting documents such as technical reports, procedures, and work instructions.
