Gross examination, or grossing, is the process by which pathology specimens (tissues) are visually inspected, verbally described, inked, sectioned and processed in preparation for microscopic examination. Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, grossing technicians will perform tasks including grossing specimens, reconciling for daily submissions, some data entry, and other ancillary tasks related to the job. The schedule for this position will be Monday - Friday from 1:30pm - 10:00pm, with overtime as needed.
Required qualifications:
Applicants must have at minimum an associate (laboratory science or medical laboratory technology) or bachelor's (chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology) degree from an accredited institution OR • Equivalent education/training that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and 12 of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination AND • Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. Applicants must also have the ability to multi-task and prioritize with high attention to detail, work well in a group setting and independently, and be able to work in a fast-paced environment to meet daily deadlines. Grossing experience is a plus but not required, as training will be provided. Due to the training required for this position we request that candidates who apply be willing to make at least a 2 year commitment for this position. Persons who are not willing to make a 2 year commitment should not apply.
