- Job Description The Sample Handling I professional prepares study materials prior to sample processing and collection and ensures accurate receipt, handling, and processing of irreplaceable clinical trial specimens.
This role operates basic to moderately complex laboratory equipment, performs data entry, and follows established procedures to maintain specimen integrity and support laboratory and sample management operations under the guidance of a sample management supervisor. Responsibilities Receive and process shipments for laboratory processing services (LPS) departments from various couriers and complete all related documentation and tasks Resolve misrouted shipments by identifying correct destinations, coordinating follow-up actions, and ensuring timely resolution Open, clean, and properly handle inbound specimen shipments in accordance with standard operating procedures Ensure quality control of discarded materials to prevent processing failures and promptly report any issues or discrepancies to management Maintain specimen temperature and integrity upon receipt to preserve sample quality for testing and analysis Scan shipments into internal databases accurately and in a timely manner to support tracking and traceability Sort and route specimens to the appropriate destination departments following established standard procedures Perform inbound kit receipt processing, including verification of contents and documentation Conduct quality control checks on requisitions to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with requirements Enter patient demographics and administrative data into internal systems with a high degree of accuracy Prepare original requisitions for hard-copy archiving, ensuring proper organization and record retention Operate and maintain automation lines and aliquoting equipment in accordance with safety and operational guidelines Perform manual aliquoting of specimens as needed to support laboratory workflows Image requisitions for upload to internal web-based systems and route them to data entry teams as required Set up, adjust, maintain, and clean laboratory and medical equipment to ensure proper functioning and reliability Analyze test and experiment results using mechanical and electrical devices to verify conformity to specifications and document findings appropriately Follow all standard operating procedures and quality standards related to specimen processing, data entry, and equipment handling Collaborate with team members and supervisors to prioritize workload and support continuous workflow in the sample management area Essential Skills Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact clearly with team members and accurately document information High attention to detail and accuracy when handling specimens, reviewing requisitions, and entering data Effective problem-solving abilities to resolve misrouted shipments, address discrepancies, and support quality control Basic ability to work independently while managing time and tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment Ability to operate and maintain basic to moderately complex laboratory and medical equipment Proficiency in data entry, including accurate input of patient demographics and administrative information into internal systems Capability to follow standard operating procedures and quality control guidelines consistently Minimum of 1 year of applicable work experience in specimen processing, sample management, laboratory support, or a related field Additional Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED (required) Associate's degree in Medical Technology or relevant vocational training (preferred) Experience with specimen processing, sample management, and data entry in a laboratory or clinical environment Familiarity with automation lines, aliquoting equipment, and basic laboratory instruments Comfort working with mechanical and electrical devices used for analyzing test and experiment results Ability to maintain organization and accuracy when handling multiple shipments and requisitions simultaneously Willingness to follow established procedures and quality standards while contributing to a collaborative team environment Work Environment This position operates in a laboratory and sample management environment that focuses on the accurate handling of clinical trial specimens. You will regularly work with laboratory and medical equipment, including automation lines, aliquoters, and mechanical and electrical devices used for analysis. The role involves frequent interaction with internal databases and web-based systems for scanning, imaging, and data entry. Work typically follows standard operating procedures and quality control guidelines, with tasks that may be repetitive but require consistent attention to detail and accuracy. The environment is structured and process-driven, with close collaboration among team members and supervision from sample management leadership to ensure timely and compliant processing of all specimens. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Torrance, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
