This role is responsible for synthesizing chemicals and evaluating the chemical and physical properties of substances. The position involves performing laboratory tests, documenting results, and contributing to the design, development, and implementation of advanced chemicals and materials for next-generation propellant applications. Key responsibilities include developing new propellant constituents and processes, improving existing propellants and manufacturing methods, performing analytical comparisons and tests on experimental samples, and preparing detailed technical reports. These reports document findings and provide recommendations regarding the suitability of methods, processes, and outcomes. The role also contributes to long-range planning and strategic goals for future projects. Other duties may be assigned as required.
Requirements:
Master of Science degree in Chemistry or a related science discipline, or Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering with 2-4 years of relevant experience in the field. Strong knowledge of advanced mathematics and chemistry principles, chemical and material properties, especially under various testing conditions, production operations, and relevant computer hardware/software systems and applications. Hands-on experience with chemical and materials testing, characterization, and analysis. Proven ability to set up and operate laboratory testing equipment, conduct laboratory research, and accurately complete test records and reports. Strong understanding of material properties, processing techniques, and engineering applications. Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills with the ability to plan, organize, analyze, and solve complex problems. Proactive self-starter capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical ideas to executive management, internal teams, customers, and prospects. Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and produce accurate, high-quality work. Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license. Must have the ability to obtain a security clearance.
Essential Functions:
Provide leadership and technical direction to chemists, engineers, and technicians. Develop and conduct chemical synthesis processes. Perform sample testing and process samples for chemical analysis. Set up, operate, and dismantle laboratory instruments and apparatuses. Conduct standard and specialized tests according to established protocols. Follow Standard Test Procedures; identify, record, and report any problems associated with test equipment or processes. Make detailed observations, perform calculations, collect data, and prepare results for evaluation. Order raw materials and request sample supplies as needed to support projects. Assist with the maintenance, calibration, and validation of laboratory equipment; monitor performance and troubleshoot issues. Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Safety Functions:
This position may involve working with or around hazardous materials, high-pressure systems, chemicals, high-voltage equipment, and/or potentially dangerous environments such as test facilities, propulsion systems, or live-fire test ranges, as well as the manufacturing and handling of propellants, pyrotechnics, and explosive devices. This role requires a strong safety mindset, consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and full compliance with safety protocols and operational and risk mitigation procedures. Employees must wear appropriate PPE, and comply with all corporate, OSHA, industry-specific safety requirements, and other regulatory safety requirements. Participation in risk assessments and safety briefings is required before conducting any hazardous testing activities. Training will be provided for all hazardous tasks.
Physical Requirements:
This position involves a combination of sedentary and active tasks. Individuals may need to sit or stand for extended periods, and walk primarily on level surfaces for portions of the workday, when in an office environment. Occasional reaching above shoulder height, reaching below the waist, and lifting may be required for handling documents, tools, or materials. Proper lifting techniques must be used at all times.
Additional duties may include:
Working at differing site elevations and on elevated work platforms, following all fall-protection and safety protocols. Performing physical tasks for extended periods, such as standing, walking, or operating equipment. Lifting, carrying, and maneuvering equipment and materials as required by the position. Working in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures (heat and cold), wind, dust, and other outdoor elements.
Work Environment:
The performance of this position may require work in manufacturing and laboratory areas as well as the outside test facilities. Under certain conditions, these environments require the use of personal protective equipment such as eye and face protection, hearing protection, protective gloves, respirators, foot protection, and lab coats. This position may also involve handling energetic materials and chemicals. The role may require working long or irregular shifts, including nights and weekends, to meet program and project deadlines.
