License /
Certification Required:
CA Polysomnographic Technologist or CA Respiratory Care Practitioner license. Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists; or Registered Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorders Specialist (RRT-SDS) or Certified Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorders Specialist (CRT-SDS) from the National Board for Respiratory Care.
BLS JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Reviews patient's medical history, allergies, current medications, patient questionnaire. Explains procedures to patient before, during and after sleep study.
Performs patient set-up:
attaches electrodes and monitors to patient according to accepted standards. Monitors patient via video for any unusual sleep behaviors. Records observations of patient throughout the sleep study at specific time intervals and as appropriate. Ensures signals are received on the computer, all monitors are recording data throughout the sleep study. Recognizes normal and abnormal sleep patterns. Correctly interprets physiologic tracings and quickly makes a decision to intervene regarding an emergency situation or potential for. Knowledgeable of protocols for CPAP, BIPAP and oxygen therapy. Illustrates and documents various aspects of the sleep study according to established guidelines and generates an accurate report by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient's safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages including pediatric through geriatric. Maintains and operates all Sleep Lab equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests Sleep Lab equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently. Additional Gathers artifact-free polysomnographic data; trouble shoots any artifacts and provides correction. Actively participates in performance improvement (PI) and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Attends at least 90 % of staff meetings annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care. Performs other duties as assigned.
