Job Description
Sample Control Technician Job Description The Sample Control Technician supports laboratory operations by managing the shipping, receiving, and handling of environmental samples and related materials. This role involves preparing and pressurizing samples, maintaining accurate documentation in accordance with standard operating procedures, and working closely with multiple departments to ensure efficient workflow. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety while working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Responsibilities Receive, verify, and organize incoming samples and materials, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation. Prepare, package, and ship samples and materials in accordance with internal procedures and shipping regulations. Process orders using internal databases and systems, maintaining accurate records of sample movement and status. Use shipping provider websites to create labels, track shipments, and coordinate deliveries and pickups. Clean and prepare sample media according to established laboratory procedures. Build, assemble, and repair flow controllers and related components as required. Assemble and dismantle shipping boxes and containers to safely transport samples and equipment. Pressurize samples following standard operating procedures and safety guidelines. Perform all documentation, sample preparation, and data handling in strict accordance with SOPs and quality requirements. Adhere to all safety protocols and operational procedures while handling samples, equipment, and chemicals. Prioritize daily workload with minimal supervision to meet deadlines and production goals. Manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment. Interpret and follow oral and written instructions accurately. Collaborate and communicate effectively with coworkers and other departments to support smooth laboratory operations. Maintain a strong focus on quality control, safety, and productivity in all aspects of work. Use internet-based tools and the Microsoft Office Suite to support documentation, communication, and reporting. Perform other support duties as assigned to assist laboratory and warehouse operations. Essential Skills Experience in shipping, receiving, and/or warehousing operations. Experience processing orders using an internal database or similar system. Strong mechanical aptitude for working with flow controllers and related equipment. Proficiency in using shipping provider websites for labels, tracking, and shipment management. Ability to take initiative and perform effectively in a fast-paced team environment. Ability to follow and comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and documentation requirements. Strong attention to detail in sample preparation, documentation, and data handling. Ability to adhere to safety protocols and operational procedures at all times. Organizational skills to prioritize work with minimal supervision. Ability to manage multiple priorities and use time effectively. Ability to interpret and understand oral and written instructions. Good communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills. Commitment to quality control, safety, high production work, and organized thought processes. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds on a continuous basis. Ability to stand for prolonged periods and work upright. Ability to bend and use hands and arms repetitively to perform moderate physical work duties. Ability to push carts with objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Adequate hearing and speaking ability to communicate effectively in person and by phone. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with sample control, sample preparation, sample receiving, and manufacturing support in a laboratory or similar environment. Familiarity with laboratory workflows and handling of environmental samples. Knowledge of internet software and the Microsoft Office Suite of products. Demonstrated versatility, flexibility, and efficiency in daily tasks. Strong teamwork skills, with the ability to work closely with all departments. Positive attitude toward safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Work Environment This role operates within an air toxics laboratory and associated warehouse areas that handle environmental samples and related materials. The environment includes the use and handling of hazardous materials such as cryogenic Dewars of liquid nitrogen, compressed gases including helium, nitrogen, and hydrogen, sharps, and liquid solvents such as methylene chloride, acetonitrile, and acetone. The Sample Control Technician must safely handle and transport bulk chemicals and follow all safety protocols, including referencing and complying with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Work is performed in a fast-paced, production-oriented setting that requires prolonged standing, repetitive use of hands and arms, bending, lifting, and pushing carts. The position involves frequent interaction with coworkers and other departments, using computers, internal databases, internet tools, and the Microsoft Office Suite to support daily tasks. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and required when working with samples, chemicals, and equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Sacramento, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
