JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction, this position is responsible for delivering and managing a comprehensive Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) educational program. Key responsibilities include providing lecture and laboratory instruction across core clinical disciplines such as Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Phlebotomy; designing and implementing curriculum; and creating educational pathways that support student credentialing and employment outcomes. The role also involves establishing program goals and standards, leading accreditation efforts, recruiting and supporting students, and coordinating clinical instruction experiences. In addition, the position contributes to institutional effectiveness through participation in college committees and engagement with the broader community..
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, develop, and implement the Medical Laboratory Technology program and associated curriculum. Collaborate with faculty and staff across the Health Sciences Division to support program development and instructional delivery. Coordinate and maintain clinical internship placements with local hospital laboratories and clinical sites. Deliver effective instruction in Medical Laboratory Technology theory, laboratory skills, and related coursework. Prepare and maintain required documentation to meet accreditation standards and regulatory requirements. Assess student learning and performance through examinations, practical evaluations, and direct observation. Promote student success through individualized advising, counseling, and academic support. Support students' professional growth by encouraging participation in relevant professional organizations. Participate in departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings, committees, and service activities. Engage in ongoing professional development to support personal growth, instructional effectiveness, and institutional goals. Maintain effective communication and positive working relationships with affiliated healthcare agencies. Provide recommendations related to budget planning, curriculum development, and overall program management Complete all other duties and responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field and two (2) years experience in medical laboratory science education. Minimum of three (3) years of proven experience in the clinical lab Certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a Medical Technologist, or the National Certification Agency (NCA) as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist; Current knowledge and technical practice skills as a medical technologist in all areas of the laboratory; Proficiency in instruction, curriculum design, program planning, and counseling; Accreditation and experience in academic/clinical coordination; Licensed as a Florida State Medical Technologist, or eligible for licensing Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written; Teaching experience with diverse populations and recent healthcare industry experience are also preferred; Appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS) Demonstrate knowledge and skills utilizing an instructional internet platform; Demonstrating the ability to recognize and respond to the individual differences of student population and a willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process Flexibility for teaching day and/or evening classes
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements for this position include: Having the physical abilities sufficient to move from room to room and maneuver in small spaces; possessing a high degree of flexibility; auditory abilities sufficient to monitor and assess laboratory and student needs; having the visual discrimination to be able to read charts and graphs, read instrument scales, discriminate colors, read microscopic materials, and record results; seeing objects as far away as in driving; seeing objects closely as in reading patient sample information and test instrument data; differentiating colors and visual structures as in reading microscope slides, labels, color comparison charts and warning symbols; and moderate muscular strength is needed as the candidate may be pushing, pulling and lifting objects more than twenty (20) pounds. This position requires an ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, reach up, and stoop. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.
