Position Summary:
The Natural Science Department is looking for a OPS lab assistants for the microbiology labs. Responsibilities may include preparing media, buffers, stains, and materials for labs; sterilization techniques, inoculations, installing, setting up, maintaining, storing, and disposing of equipment and supplies. Laboratory Assistants also aid in keeping the lab facility clean and organized.
General Responsibilities:
Helping to set up labs, maintaining, organizing, and cleaning labs and lab prep rooms. Specific responsibilities will be designed around the lab needs. For example, helping to prepare standards for chemistry labs or setting up models for anatomy labs. Typical Essential Duties (General Responsibilities): Communicate with staff and faculty to prioritize tasks Performing laboratory set up for lab courses Carefully pipet aliquots of experiment solutions, label, and store properly Preparation of standard solutions and buffers, and dilutions Preparation of bacteriological media following good aseptic techniques Inoculation of bacterial cultures (liquid and agar plates) Maintaining a safe environment including wearing PPE, proper disposal of waste Maintaining and inventorying supplies and equipment as needed Maintaining a clean, orderly, and well-supplied prep room and classroom Safely unpack and organize stock of specialized items utilized in the department facilities Perform related duties as required- every day is a little different!
Skills:
Attention to detail, good organization, good communication skills preferred, and knowledge of general lab safety practices.
Physical Requirements:
Working in a lab can require standing or walking on your feet for extended periods of time. All employees are required to follow lab safety procedures and must wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, and a lab coat when necessary.
Educational Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Plus, some college courses are required. Applicants should have completed at least one microbiology course or have the equivalent training.
Experience Requirements :
Two (2) years' experience in the science field is preferred. Must have taken science labs in biology and chemistry. Advanced biology courses and microbiology a plus. Familiar with lab procedures and lab safety. Dependable and able to work independently after training. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
