Provides functional supervision over laboratory personnel. Primary supervision is received from the Assistant Lab Manager or designee. Functional supervision is exercised over Laboratory Technicians and student employees. Works closely with laboratory personnel and with allied health care personnel from other departments. Directs and performs the pre-analytical processes including receipt, data entry, labeling, and processing of Anatomic Pathology specimens. Serves as the technical expert for specific tasks, processes and procedures relating to laboratory functions. Performs accessioning, labeling, triaging of specimens.
Triaging examples include:
intraoperative consultation, FNA slide preparation, special studies, research, and routine. Serves as the technical subject matter expert for telephone inquiries requiring advanced knowledge of sample collection techniques and laboratory protocol. 2. Reviews variance and root cause analysis reports, as directed, assists with development and implementation of corrective action plans. 3. Maintains laboratory equipment and monitors equipment performance, diagnoses problems and makes repairs or initiates service requests. 4. Performs daily laboratory duties regularly and maintains technical competency. Provides coverage for staff during lunch and break periods. Fills in on rotation for unscheduled and scheduled absences, as needed. 5. In collaboration with laboratory management, provides direct supervision of laboratory personnel. Assists with interviewing and selecting new staff. Develops and implements training for new and existing staff. Assists with the design and completion of competency assessments of laboratory technicians and student employees. Participates in performance management activities and works closely with the laboratory management to develop, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of any performance improvement plans. Coaches and mentors staff members. Maintains laboratory regulatory and accreditation standards and monitors employee compliance with these standards. 6. Participates in the review, revision and implementation of existing standard operating procedures, as well as participates in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation. Includes developing and executing validation plans for equipment and testing materials. 7. Performs testing on AP specimens to include tissue block embedding, FNA slide preparation and staining, and cutting, staining and coverslipping intraoperative slides. 8. Collect, record, and review/analyze data for the purpose of quality improvement, process improvement, regulation/compliance, and patient safety. 9. Review maintenance and temperature logs, perform corrective action, resolve discrepancies and inconsistencies. 10. In collaboration with the laboratory management, provides oversight of inventory and supply management. 11. Performs special projects as requested.
Schedule:
Monday-Friday 0830-1700 or 0600-1430. Minimum Eligibility Requirements 1. Three years of laboratory experience including one year as Laboratory Technician II or equivalent level experience, or 2. Certification as a Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) and one year of Laboratory experience, or 3. Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals three years, or 4. Two years of technical schooling required for certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Desired Qualifications 1. Anatomic Pathology Laboratory experience preferred. 2. MLA(ASCP) certification or eligible. 3. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. 4. Demonstrated proficiency with EPIC Beaker Laboratory Information System. 5. Experience providing functional supervision is desired.
