Job Description
Hiring for Specimen Processor I - Entry Level Job Description The Specimen Processor I performs specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and accurate data entry in a fast-paced, high-throughput laboratory environment. This role introduces and prepares biological specimens for testing by following established standard operating procedures to ensure timely, precise, and reliable laboratory results. Responsibilities Introduce and prepare biological specimens for laboratory analysis in accordance with established standard operating procedures. Open specimen containers and pour samples into appropriate secondary containers to prepare for analysis and testing. Verify that patient demographic information accurately matches the corresponding test requisition forms. Enter patient and specimen information into the computer system to ensure accurate tracking and documentation. Meet established production metrics and quality standards to support timely and accurate test results. Unpack incoming specimens and route them to the correct staging or processing areas. Pack and ship specimens to designated testing facilities when required, following proper packaging and transport procedures. Properly prepare, label, and store excess specimen samples for potential additional testing or reference. Identify, resolve, and document issues with problem specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols. Handle, segregate, and dispose of medical and chemical waste safely and in compliance with regulations. Follow all applicable environmental health and safety policies and procedures while performing daily tasks. Operate automated laboratory instrumentation under supervision as needed to support specimen processing activities. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent. 0-2 years of work experience, preferably in a laboratory, medical, or production environment. Comfort handling human biological specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples. Proficient computer and typing skills for accurate and efficient data entry. Ability to pass or be evaluated through a standardized color vision test to determine if accommodations are needed. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and work while sitting or standing for extended periods. Capability to work while wearing appropriate protective equipment. Strong hand-eye coordination to accurately identify and handle specimens by touch and sight. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively in a team environment. High level of attention to detail with strong problem-solving abilities. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in laboratory processing, specimen processing, or accessioning is preferred. Prior medical or production experience is beneficial. Familiarity with laboratory workflows and high-throughput environments is an advantage. Work Environment This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting within a medical center in Hobart, Indiana. Initial training lasts approximately 4-6 weeks and takes place in Itasca, Illinois, followed by onsite training in Hobart. Training is conducted exclusively on a night schedule from 6:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., and mileage for travel from home to the training location may be reimbursable. The environment is fast-paced and high-throughput, requiring consistent use of computers, laboratory information systems, and automated instrumentation under supervision. Team members regularly handle human biological specimens and work with protective equipment while adhering to strict safety and waste disposal protocols. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Hobart, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
