Job Description

Clinical Laboratory Accessioner Job Description The Clinical Laboratory Accessioner supports a CLIA-certified laboratory by receiving, accessioning, and preparing patient samples for testing, with a primary focus on stool specimens used in innovative gastrointestinal diagnostic testing. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate sample handling, data entry, and documentation so that Clinical Laboratory Scientists can perform downstream testing reliably and efficiently. The position is highly repetitive and routine, requiring strong attention to detail, comfort with handling biological specimens, and the ability to follow standard operating procedures precisely in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Responsibilities Receive patient stool samples from shippers and verify that each specimen meets established laboratory criteria for suitability and acceptance. Accession samples according to laboratory procedures, including confirming patient information, assigning identifiers, and preparing accurate specimen labels. Aliquot stool samples into appropriate tubes for testing, ensuring correct volume, labeling, and traceability for downstream processing. Document all sample receipt, accessioning, labeling, and aliquoting activities in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with a high degree of accuracy. Perform general laboratory support tasks such as tube labeling, equipment cleaning and basic maintenance, biohazard waste removal, and stocking consumables and supplies. Operate basic laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, to support sample processing and preparation. Assist with routine laboratory setup and maintenance activities to ensure a clean, organized, and compliant work area. Support RNA/DNA-related sample preparation steps, including separating nucleic acids from stool samples according to established protocols. Identify and recognize problems that may adversely affect proper processing of samples, such as labeling discrepancies, compromised specimens, or equipment issues, and promptly notify appropriate laboratory leadership or designated personnel. Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory policies to maintain quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. Maintain accurate, timely data entry for all assigned tasks, including scanning, logging, and tracking samples throughout the workflow. Collaborate with colleagues across a multi-functional laboratory environment to ensure smooth, efficient sample throughput and support shared team goals. Perform other related laboratory duties as assigned to support overall operations and evolving business needs. Work Environment This position is based in an on-site clinical laboratory environment operating Monday through Friday during standard daytime hours, with participation in a rotating Saturday schedule approximately every other month as part of the team's coverage. The role involves working at the bench with patient stool samples, laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, and a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for tracking and documentation. Work includes extended periods of standing, repetitive sample handling, labeling, scanning, aliquoting, and data entry in a regulated CLIA setting that emphasizes quality, safety, and compliance. The laboratory is clean, organized, and designed to support high-throughput sample processing for advanced gastrointestinal diagnostic testing. Over time, as operations expand, the lab is expected to transition to first and second shift coverage in the future, and candidates should be comfortable with the possibility of shift-based work down the road. The culture emphasizes collaboration, professional conduct, inclusiveness, and a shared mission to advance innovative diagnostics that improve gastrointestinal health.
