Job Description

Job Summary The Clinical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the collection, processing, and analysis of patient specimens. This role requires technical proficiency in phlebotomy and the performance of CLIA-waived testing, hematology, and urinalysis. The ideal candidate ensures the highest standards of accuracy, safety, and patient care while strictly adhering to regulatory guidelines.
Core Responsibilities Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection:
Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients of all ages using appropriate equipment (straight needles, butterflies). Collect non-blood specimens, including urine and swabs, while providing clear instructions to patients for self-collection. Maintain 100% accuracy in patient identification and specimen labeling. Laboratory Testing (CLIA-Waived): Conduct CLIA-waived testing (e.g., rapid strep, flu, glucose, pregnancy tests) following manufacturer instructions exactly. Perform Urinalysis and Microscopy , including chemical dipstick reading and preparing slides for provider-performed microscopy (PPM). Assist in basic Hematology tasks, such as loading automated analyzers for Complete Blood Counts (CBC) and recording results.
Specimen Processing:
Prepare specimens for on-site analysis or transport to reference laboratories (centrifuging, aliquoting, and packaging). Ensure specimen integrity by monitoring storage temperatures (refrigerated, frozen, or room temperature).
Quality Control & Compliance:
Perform and document daily Quality Control (QC) for all lab equipment and testing kits. Maintain meticulous laboratory records and logs to ensure compliance with CLIA and HIPAA regulations. Monitor laboratory inventory and proactively order supplies to prevent service delays.
Qualifications & Skills Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in a health-related field preferred.
Certification:
Valid Phlebotomy Certification (e.g., CPT, ASCP, or AMT) is highly preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year experience in a clinical laboratory or physician office laboratory (POL) setting.
Technical Skills:
Proven knowledge of CLIA-waived testing protocols. Proficiency in EMR/LIS systems for data entry and results reporting.
Personal Attributes:
Exceptional attention to detail, strong interpersonal communication, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive motions. Must be comfortable handling potentially infectious biological substances and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
