Overview:
As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the laboratory team by performing routine laboratory tasks with accuracy and care. This role offers an excellent entry point into the healthcare industry, providing valuable experience in specimen handling, laboratory equipment maintenance, and quality assurance. Responsibilities:
Receiving and sorting specimens in the laboratory department. Performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure optimal operation. Conducting specimen preparation tasks such as centrifuging samples, building worklists, aliquoting, and slide preparation. Checking specimens for clots and fibrin, inoculating specimens, and preparing them for testing. Preparing reagents and media necessary for laboratory testing. Recording data such as temperature charts and maintaining accurate departmental records. Performing quality assurance and quality control procedures, including resolving pending sample lists and locating missing specimens. Decontaminating work areas regularly, including weekly radioactive wipe tests and proper disposal of biohazardous waste. Changing gas cylinders and maintaining lab safety protocols in accordance with PPE requirements. Operating laboratory computer systems and PCs efficiently. Supporting safety protocols by following all regulatory guidelines and safety regulations. Assisting in lab cleanup, specimen storage, and retrieval, and maintaining organized departmental files. Completing required training and competency assessments to stay current with lab procedures.
Required Skills:
Basic technical knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety regulations. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling and documentation. Ability to multitask effectively and prioritize workload to maximize workstation efficiency. Good communication skills and the ability to interact courteously with coworkers and external contacts. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation and computer systems is a plus but not mandatory. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately. Have Skills:
Medical assistant training or coursework in medical sciences. Previous experience in a laboratory setting, particularly in specimen processing or QA/QC activities. Knowledge of laboratory safety and biohazard disposal protocols. Experience operating laboratory equipment like centrifuges, incubators, or slide stainers.
Preferred Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Formal medical assisting training or coursework in science and math are preferred but not essential. No prior laboratory experience required; training will be provided.
Other Requirements:
Flexible schedule with the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently. Ability to work safely in a clinical environment, including following safety and PPE guidelines. Willingness to perform routine maintenance and safety checks, including weekly radioactive wipe tests if applicable. Must be able to stand for extended periods, perform physical tasks such as moving supplies and specimens, and handle biohazardous materials safely.
