Job Description:

Jefferson Community College, Watertown, NY, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) System is accepting applications for a part-time (20 hours/week) Lab Assistant to begin by May 18, 2026. The position is a temporary/provisional appointment. Work hours will include some day, evening and weekend hours depending on the academic calendar. This position directly supports the biology and chemistry instructional science labs. This position involves maintaining an inventory of and control over scientific laboratory supplies and equipment; assists in the preparation of experiment media and solutions, and assists faculty members in setting up classroom demonstrations; keeps records and makes reports. Necessary skills include knowledge of pertinent laboratory terminology, procedures, and equipment, working knowledge of elementary principles of chemistry and biology; working knowledge of preparation and dispensing of chemical solutions and receiving, storing, maintaining, and issuing chemical /biology lab supplies and equipment. The successful candidate should have exceptional attention to detail and be highly organized. Additionally, a strong work ethic and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate should also maintain a positive attitude and be flexible to adapt to the changing needs of students and instructors.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

: Graduation from an accredited college with an associate's degree in biology, chemistry, lab tech, or related field; or Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years of technical laboratory experience.

Required :

Successful completion of a Civil Service Exam for permanent appointment. Applicants must interact and communicate effectively with diverse populations, foster inclusion, and promote equal access and treatment for groups traditionally under-represented in higher education.

Preferred :

Coursework and/or work experience in microbiology and general chemistry. Prior work experience in an academic science lab. Working knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and procedures. Experience maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing scientific equipment. Training or work experience with regulated medical waste and hazardous waste.

Additional Information:

$19.41/hr.; will increase to $20/hr. beginning September 1, 2026.
