Job Description

Student Worker Microbiology Student Assistant (Fall 26 - Spring 27)Purpose/Objective of the
Role:
The Microbiology Student Assistant will prepare media and supplies for all microbiology labs, while also helping to maintain order and cleanliness in the departments teaching laboratories and prep areas.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
Cleaning and sterilizing laboratory glassware Preparing various media as needed for culture growth Using a pipette aseptically, inoculating both agar and broth mediaGram staining, acid-fast staining, and identifying microbes using a compound microscopeQualifications/Courses completed:

Chemistry 110 and 111 and one of the following
Biology Courses:
120, 125, 271, 272, 280
Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of basic laboratory safety, use of aseptic techniqueExperience inoculating mediaExperience preparing slides and using a microscope to analyze samplesKnowledge of bacteria staining techniquesKnowledge of the basic shapes of bacteria
Potential Future Career Benefit:
This position will provide experience applying techniques specific to the microbiology laboratory, as well as developing general laboratory hygiene practices that can be applied across multiple fields. The student will be challenged to develop the ability to multi-task, while also paying careful attention to details critical to maintaining sterility of instruments and purity of bacteria cultures. Career fields and graduate programs this job supports include: medical and dental fields, veterinary science, bacteriology, clinical microbiology, environmental microbiology, industrial microbiology, mycology, parasitology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, epidemiology, food and chemical industries, ecology.
