Job Title:
Specimen Processor I Job Description The Specimen Processor I receives, verifies, and prepares biological specimens to ensure they are accurately identified and ready for laboratory testing and analysis. This role supports smooth laboratory operations by maintaining specimen integrity, entering precise data into laboratory systems, and routing samples efficiently to the appropriate testing areas. The position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on laboratory experience while still in school, working part-time in a structured and safety-focused environment. Responsibilities Receive and log incoming biological specimens, ensuring they are properly documented and ready for testing and analysis. Verify patient and test information for accuracy to ensure proper identification and traceability throughout the testing process. Prepare specimens for analysis by aliquoting, labeling, and organizing samples according to established laboratory procedures. Accurately enter specimen and patient data into laboratory information systems to support tracking, workflow efficiency, and quality standards. Sort, stage, and route specimens to the appropriate testing areas to maintain smooth and timely laboratory operations. Package and coordinate shipment of specimens to external testing facilities when required, following all relevant procedures and guidelines. Monitor specimen integrity, document discrepancies, and assist in resolving issues related to compromised or incomplete samples. Maintain proper storage conditions for specimens and dispose of medical or chemical waste in compliance with safety and environmental guidelines. Support laboratory productivity by meeting established turnaround times and quality benchmarks. Operate automated laboratory equipment under supervision as needed and assist with general workflow support. Follow all laboratory safety protocols and standard operating procedures to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. Essential Skills High School Diploma or equivalent. 0-2 years of work experience, preferably in a medical, laboratory, or production environment. Comfort handling human biological specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples. Proficient computer and typing skills for accurate data entry into laboratory systems. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and work in protective equipment. Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time while performing repetitive tasks. Strong eye-hand coordination to accurately identify and handle specimens by touch and sight. High level of attention to detail with the ability to recognize and resolve problems. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to successfully complete a standardized color vision test to determine whether accommodation is needed for color-dependent tasks. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous medical or production experience is preferred. Interest in gaining practical laboratory experience while attending school. Demonstrated reliability and punctuality in a structured work environment. Willingness to learn and follow detailed laboratory procedures and protocols. Work Environment This is a part-time, first-shift position of approximately 24 hours per week. The typical schedule is 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM on Monday and Friday, and 1:00 PM to 6:30 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The role is based in a laboratory environment where you will regularly handle human biological specimens and work with automated laboratory equipment and computer-based systems. You will wear appropriate protective equipment and follow strict safety and environmental guidelines, including proper storage and disposal of medical and chemical waste. The work involves periods of sitting and standing, repetitive specimen handling, and occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds. The environment is structured, process-driven, and focused on accuracy, quality, and timely turnaround of testing. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Wilmington, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.90 - $18.90/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
