Description Position Summary Medical Lab Technician Under limited supervision, performs tests in all areas of the laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Medical Lab Scientist Performs tests in all areas of the laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of patients. May have oversight and responsibility of a Medical Laboratory Technician in the laboratory setting. Position Accountabilities Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Performs all required procedures related to counting and identification of blood cells, coagulation studies and other specialized hematologic procedures. Inoculates, cultivates, classifies and identifies microorganisms found in bodily fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, and surgical specimens in order to provide data on cause, cure and prevention of infectious diseases. Performs surveys and does comparative analyses of different systems and assays; may participate in research activities and investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies, and introduces, demonstrates, effects, and recommends as is appropriate. Receives blood specimens sent to laboratory or draws blood from patient by venipuncture, observing strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens. Analyzes Samples of patients such as blood urine, or tissue and verifies results. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains according to standard formulas and procedures. Reviews and reports test results to ensure quality control. Consults with Pathologist regarding difficult analyses or abnormal findings. Cross matches donor's and patient's blood to determine compatibility. Studies morphology of red cells in terms of proportions of cells in various stages of development and other characteristics of red corpuscles which may be related to disease processes. Collects blood specimens from newborn through geriatric patients by venipuncture or capillary collection, as appropriate. May perform duties as a lead technologist for Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Urology, and Coagulation. The following job accountabilities may be reassigned: Participates in the orientation of nursing students from Connors State College as well as other nursing schools to laboratory processes and protocols. Use standard laboratory equipment, as well as laboratory diluters, photometers, urinalysis analyzers and vacuum blood collection tubes. Receives requested stock items and distributes them to appropriate place within the laboratory. Maintains good relations with patients, medical staff and other departments as well as other hospitals that use services. Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Attends meetings as required. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Requirements Medical Lab Technician Minimum Education

• Associate's Degree Required Certification/Registration
• Medical Laboratory Technician. Board of Registration eligible Preferred Experience
• One year experience in hospital laboratory Preferred Certification/Registration
• ASCP Medical Lab Scientist Minimum Education
• Bachelor's DegreeRequired Certification/Registration Medical
• Technologist. Board of Registration eligible, ASCPPreferred Experience
• One year experience in hospital laboratory
