Flint, MICHIGAN Apply Now Job Summary The Undergraduate Research Assistant will support an interdisciplinary cognitive load research project funded by the Department of Defense and led by Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science faculty from the University of Michigan-Flint and University of Michigan-Ann Arbor campuses. The research assistant will assist with the installation of new sensors for the cognitive load project, as well as support the integration of the measurement system into a Polaris MRZR vehicle. Responsibilities will include hands-on hardware assembly, sensor installation, data collection and preprocessing, and contributing to the preparation of research publications and reports. Responsibilities• Assist with the installation and integration of sensors for the cognitive load research project. Support the conversion and adaptation of the measurement system for use in a Polaris MRZR vehicle. Perform hands-on hardware assembly, wiring, mounting, and troubleshooting of research equipment. Help configure, test, and calibrate sensors and data acquisition systems. Assist with data collection during laboratory and/or field testing. Document experimental procedures, system configurations, and testing results. Help maintain and organize research equipment, tools, and project materials. Participate in project meetings and provide updates on assigned tasks. Contribute to the preparation of research reports, presentations, and publications as appropriate. Required Qualifications• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan-Flint. Academic background in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field. Hands-on experience with manufacturing systems and tolls such as mill, lathe, sheet metal work Familiarity with sensors, data acquisition systems, or measurement equipment. Willingness to work on-site in laboratory and outdoor environments (testing grounds). Familiarity with CAD, CN machining and 3D printing technologies. Good problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new tools, systems, and methods. Desired Qualifications• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills; ability to work respectfully with a diverse interdisciplinary team. Effective oral and written communication abilities, particularly for documenting procedures and sharing progress. Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel) is a plus. Proactive problem-solving attitude; flexible and receptive to learning new techniques. Good problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new tools, systems, and methods. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team. Modes of Work Onsite The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
