Full Job Description SUMMARY:
Receive and sort medical samples by client or specimen type for laboratory testing. This position performs a wide variety of histology processes to include, tissue processing, case set-up, in-take of cases, and other duties as assigned and required.
POSITION
Laboratory Assistant - 1st Shift (7 am - 3:30 pm) position available. Pay dependent on experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Perform routine hematoxylin and eosin staining and special staining of slides.
  • Perform coverslipping of stained slides.
  • Operate and clean laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Perform routine maintenance of equipment.
  • Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining.
  • Monitor inventory and stock laboratory supplies.
  • Perform clerical duties associated with the histology laboratory.
  • Sustains the gross room workflow by creating consistent flow in and out of the gross room.
  • Enter specimen gross descriptions from documents or dictation
  • Loads tissue processors.
  • Assures absolute accuracy in the matching of specimen container label and label on specimen cassettes in which specimen will be placed for further processing. Loads prepared cassettes into processing racks.
  • Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments used in research experiments.
  • Demonstrates the ability to accurately prioritize and triage specimens, handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste based on the laboratory's procedural manual, and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Aides in discrepancy resolution.
  • Evaluate new laboratory equipment and procedures, and clean and maintain equipment based of laboratory procedures.
  • Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures.
  • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling; maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification
  • Record a gross description for each biopsy specimen, dissect and prepare tissue for cassettes
  • Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable.
  • Prepare dissected tissue specimens and place into cassettes.
  • Prepare and embed processed tissue for slide preparation for Histotechs.
  • Prepare and stain slides.
  • Perform QC.
  • Complete all associated paperwork.
  • Follow the laboratory's applicable procedures for job-related responsibilities.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
  • Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals
  • Working knowledge and understanding of computers.
  • Dependable, flexible and adaptable in all aspects of work.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the company.
  • Maintains all necessary documentation and current logs.
  • Reports all concerns of test quality and/or patient or employee safety to a Supervisor.
  • Has a good understanding and working knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Science (Biology or Chemistry preferred). Must be qualified for high complexity testing under CLIA 88 by one of the following routes: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or other laboratory science. 60 semester hours of from an accredited college or university that includes the following: 24 semester hours of science related courses to include 6 semester hours of biology, 6 semester hours of chemistry, and 12 semester hours of other science courses in combination. AND either completion of a laboratory training program or 3 months of documented training by a pathologist. Prior to September 1, 1997 - Have a high school diploma and documented training appropriate to the testing performed. Transcript proving required credit hours required.
