Job Description

Research Laboratory Technician Advertising/Posting Title Research Laboratory Technician Posting Summary The Research Laboratory Technician supports the day-to-day operations of two research laboratories within the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Sciences at the University of Vermont. These labs investigate rehabilitation across the lifespan including areas related to interoception, mind-body interventions, motor control and learning, and sensorimotor function. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining specialized research equipment including robotic systems, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroencephalography (EEG), and surface electromyography (EMG); setting up and conducting human subjects research sessions; managing and analyzing research data using MATLAB, SPSS, and related tools; and supporting study coordination and documentation across both laboratories. The technician works under the co-supervision of both Principal Investigators and collaborates with graduate students, undergraduate research assistants, and interdisciplinary collaborators across UVM departments. Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience) Education Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, kinesiology, computer science, psychology, or a related field. Experience Demonstrated experience with the Kinarm Endpoint Robot, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), surface electromyography (EMG), and MATLAB data analysis. Experience working with human participants in a structured research, clinical, or laboratory environment. Demonstrated ability to maintain organized and accurate records and documentation. Skills and Abilities Strong technical aptitude and demonstrated comfort learning and operating specialized research equipment. Proficiency in MATLAB for data processing and analysis. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure data integrity and protocol adherence. Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary research team. Strong written and verbal communication skills and professional demeanor in a research setting. Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with research participants across the lifespan, including children and adolescents, older adults, and individuals with neurological conditions. Desirable Qualifications Familiarity with experimental control software such as Dexterit-E, Psychtoolbox, or LabChart. Prior experience working under an IRB-approved human subjects research protocol. Knowledge of or interest in rehabilitation science, motor control and learning, pediatric populations, or interoception research.
