The Shared Resources Specialist I - Flow Cytometry (FC) is responsible for supporting the needs of researchers at Fred Hutch investigators as users of the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FC-SR). This role involves assisting scientific researchers with the flow cytometry process, including instrument calibration and maintenance, instrument setup, operation, and troubleshooting. The Specialist I will work as part of a team to provide support and training to users. This is an entry level position within the Shared Resources department with substantial room for growth. Responsibilities:
Research Support:
Involves research support that is mainly under the direction of the FC-SR leadership or higher-level laboratory personnel. Performs bench work as assigned, including preparing stock solutions for instrument operation and cleaning. Stocks supplies for wet lab and instrument workstations. Will learn and perform daily responsibilities to ensure that the FC-SR Specialist I develops a strong understanding of the fundamentals of flow cytometry.
Research development:
Establish and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with faculty, researchers, and external users and assist with cytometric analysis and cell sorting.
Equipment Oversight:
Perform basic equipment operation and maintenance. Learn to coordinate and complete maintenance on some equipment and use relevant software. Potentially review and identify new equipment needs. Assist in supply management.
Training and Education:
Assist in developing SOPs, training materials, and guidelines for investigators use of equipment. Learn to train users in the proper operation of instrumentation and assist with experimental setup. May supervise work-study students, interns and lab aids.
Administrative tasks:
Report or deliver results to users. Accurately documenting laboratory activities. Performing basic billing requirements. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in the field of
Education:
Biology, microbiology, biochemistry or related physical or biological science, OR Associate's degree and 1+ years of experience, OR GED/ High School Diploma and 3+ years of experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new systems and techniques; Ability to learn and operate a variety of flow cytometers and cell sorters. Previous experience in operation and maintenance of flow cytometers and cell sorters. Basic understanding of conventional and spectral flow cytometry. Excellent communication skills and organizational skills. Ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented, shared resource lab environment. Experience with MS Office suite of applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, etc.) Record keeping and database management. Capable of undertaking work with supervision and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The hourly pay range for this position is from $29.77 to $42.39 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
