Job Description

Job description GESTRA Engineering, Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented Soils Laboratory Technician to join our materials testing team. In this role, you will assist our lab, focusing on the precision testing of soil and aggregate samples. Your work will provide the critical data our engineers need to ensure the structural integrity of foundations and infrastructure projects throughout the region. The Role As a Soils Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for processing samples collected from construction sites and performing standardized tests in a controlled laboratory environment. You will work with specialized equipment to determine the physical and engineering properties of materials, ensuring all results meet strict ASTM and AASHTO requirements.
Schedule:
Typically Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with occasional overtime based on project volume.
Key Responsibilities Laboratory Testing:
Conduct routine to complex tests including Proctor density (moisture-density relationship), sieve analysis (gradation), Atterberg limits, and moisture content.
Sample Management:
Receive, log, and organize soil and aggregate samples from the field; ensure proper storage and disposal protocols are followed.
Data Analysis:
Accurately calculate and record test results using specialized software and spreadsheets; verify data for consistency and precision.
Equipment Calibration:
Maintain and calibrate sensitive laboratory instruments, such as scales, ovens, and mechanical shakers, to ensure accurate readings.
Quality Control:
Strictly adhere to laboratory quality manuals and industry standards to maintain the firm's laboratory accreditation.
Collaboration:
Work closely with Project Managers and Field Technicians to communicate test results and ensure project deadlines are met.
Requirements & Qualifications Experience:
1+ years of experience in a laboratory or construction materials testing environment is preferred, but we are willing to train candidates with strong technical aptitude.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; coursework in math or science is a plus.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in basic mathematical computations and data entry; experience with Microsoft Excel and Word is highly valued.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift and move sample bags or buckets weighing up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods while processing materials.
Detail-Oriented:
Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to follow complex, multi-step testing procedures without deviation.
Compliance:
Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.
Certifications & Preferences Preferred Certifications:
NICET Level I or II in Geotechnical/Construction Materials Testing. Wis
DOT HTCP
Certifications (such as Aggregate Technician - AGGTEC-I). ACI Laboratory Testing Technician certifications.

$18.00 - $22.00 per hour
