Job Description

Job Overview Responsible to coordinate and provide nursing services to patients of the Competency Restoration Unit in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Unit, the policies, and procedures of the Health Services Unit, and consistent with recognized nursing standards. The jail-based competency restoration program aims to restore individuals' to competency to stand trial by increasing the participant's rational and factual understanding of the legal process, enhancing their ability to effectively consult with legal counsel, improving awareness and consideration of their respective pending charges and potential legal implications, and providing effective and prompt psychiatric rehabilitation, and medication evaluation and monitoring in a therapeutic and safe milieu. Below is a list of your responsibilities as a Behavioral Health LPN at the Fayette County Detention Center located in Lexington, KY
  • Assist in ensuring 24-hour coverage nursing services of Competency Restoration Unit and appropriate provision of clinical treatment.
  • Coordinates Competency Restoration Unit nursing sick call to ensure appropriate referral for physician follow-up.
  • Clinical duties include:
  • Psychiatric and physician orders are implemented in a timely, clinically effective manner.
  • Medications are administered and monitored in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Competency Restoration Unit.
  • Patients admitted to the Competency Restoration Unit receive Initial Nursing Assessment upon admission to the unit or as soon as the patient's condition permits.
  • Changes in a patient's functioning and critical incidents are documented in the Medical Record.
  • Nursing Discharge Summary is completed when a patient is transferred from the Competency Restoration Unit.
  • Assists in coordination of psychiatric services to ensure the psychiatrist is informed of psychotropic medication compliance, changes in patient functioning and results of laboratory testing in a timely manner.
  • Provide group activities for patients related primarily to health and wellness.
  • Ensure Medication Administration Records (MARS) are maintained and updated.
  • Abides by the security regulations and confidentiality of patient information requirements of the facility.
  • Monitors medical supplies to facilitate appropriate inventory and ordering.
  • Interrelates and works effectively with Health Services staff, prison staff and administrative staff.
  • Conduct regular tabletop and cell-side/bedside check-ins.
  • Perform team-based assessments and clinical interventions
  • Comply with employee standards and applicable employee standards of the facility. Compliance includes, but is not limited to, the maintenance of a working environment and personal appearance consistent with professional responsibilities, development of harmonious working relationships, and timely notification of supervisory personnel of absences from institution.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse licensed within the state of employment, license must be in good standing.
  • Experience in providing services to a mentally ill and/or correctional population preferred.
  • Follow all applicable technical instructions and health services bulletins.
  • CPR certification.
