Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
SPECIAL EDUCATION
- Saginaw, Michigan
REPORTS TO
Principals of Millet Learning Center and Millet Learning Center Nursing Administrator.
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for providing health care services and the implementation of health care programs for students with health care needs during school as delegated, assigned, and supervised by the School Nursing Administrator. This position will assist the School Nursing Administrator in the provision of health care related services to allow a positive educational opportunity for students by meeting individual health care needs of students as identified in the student's
IEP. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Reports to the School Nursing Administrator for assignment. Provides student specific health related services as delegated/assigned by the School Nursing Administrator. Maintains and updates medical records for students in accordance with building/program and Michigan Department of Health guidelines. Receives student specific training in the provision of health related services. Administers medications as directed by the School Nursing Administrator. Responsible for the administration of medications in the absence of the School Nurse(s). Assists the School Nursing Administrator in the development and implementation of student health-related training programs. Attends clinical meetings as assigned and directed by the School Nursing Administrator. Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in the school. Communicates with parents/guardians and staff as directed by the School Nursing Administrator regarding medical/health care procedures for students. As directed, assists the School Nursing Administrator, Building Administrator and Staff in planning and implementation of behavior management procedures for students. Performs other duties as assigned by School Nursing Administrator and/or Building Administrator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/equivalent required. State of Michigan LPN license required. Valid medication card as recognized by the National Association of Practical Nurse Educators that allows the LPN to dispense medication(s) is required. Must have current CPR and first aid certificate. Prior experience with pediatrics and/or persons with physical, mental, or chronic health impairments preferred. Proficiency in technical health care procedures including tracheotomies, suctioning, clean intermittent catheterization, tube feeding, etc. is required. Ability to accept supervision and direction. Demonstrate the physical stamina necessary for lifting and moving special education students, ages 0-26 years and for implementing the physical requirements identified in meeting individual student health care needs and/or building administrative operating procedures and for performing the essential job responsibilities. Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written manner and to work cooperatively with diverse staff, students, parents and public. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with department, building and district established policies and procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student, parent and staff information. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams. Previous experience working within a Total Quality Management organization is desirable.
