MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Position Summary:
The Medical Assistants function is to provide direct care to clinic patients and assist providers (Physicians, Physician Assistants, Family Nurse Practitioners) in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Arizona Medical Board and UCHC policies and procedures. Position may support multiple work sites and require valid driver's license and vehicle insurance as well as reliable means of transportation. Essential Functions 1. Assists the provider with patients before, during and after visit while maintaining smooth patient flow. a. Greet Patients and instruct in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner. b. Prepare patient for examination, treatment and assists physician with exam/procedure when needed while applying the principles of aseptic technique and infection control. Carry out written provider orders for lab tests, diagnostics, treatments or injections c. Documents vital signs and chief complaint according to protocols and other testing deemed by chronic illness, i.e.: DM, foot check, eye exam, etc. Observes, recognizes and reports significant patient symptoms to RN/LPN or physician. Give anticipatory guidance for EPSDT visit. d. Optimizes provider time with patients by anticipating provider and patient needs. Ensures referrals or labs on chart at time of visit for review. Completes necessary documentation if patient is participating in a disease management program. e. Recognizes and responds to emergencies according to protocol. 2. Performs routine (CLIA) waived laboratory testing including the preparation, collection, and documentation and maintains logs for testing per lab policies. Performs in house lab tests such as: urine pregnancy, hemoglobin, urine dipstick and blood glucose. Tracking of patient lab results. 3. Maintains logs and orders needed dispensary, injectables, medical supplies and lab supplies. Maintains orderliness of exam rooms by cleaning after each patient and restocking at the end of the day. 4. Complies with Quality Improvement (QI) standard by performing daily, weekly and monthly check accordingly to clinical protocols. Participates in QI audits and CQI as assigned. Comply with UCHC and regulatory risk management and safety procedures such as those applicable to primary medical care clinics under Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations. 5. Engages in effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication with patient relatives' visitors and all members of the multi disciplinary team. Follow up phone calls are initiated per provider direction and instructs patients on the methods of health promotion and disease prevention. 6. Administers prescribed medications and prescriptions within scope of practice and assists with medication refills per policy. 7. Maintains patient confidentiality and protects operations by keeping patient records confidential in compliance with UCHC and regulatory confidentiality standards and policies. 8. Participate in work groups & teams for process improvement & program development as needed. 9. Floats to other clinics or departments as needed or directed by a manager or supervisor. Attends and participates in mandatory in-service and staff meetings and participates in voluntary in- service or outside trainings and staff meetings as appropriate. 2. Assist in orientation and training of new Medical Assistant staff and/or student externs. 3. Participates in inter-disciplinary task forces and work groups as relevant. 4. All other duties as assigned. Qualifications/Requirements High School Diploma or GED One to two years experience working as a medical assistant in a primary care clinic. Phlebotomy and clinical laboratory experience preferred (not applicable to CFMC work site) Reliable vehicle and proof of insurance (for incumbents assigned to multiple work sites) Bi-lingual, English/Spanish is preferred. Licensure/Certification Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited Medical Assistant training program for all hires after Jan 2002 or Certified Nurse Assistant (CAN) Certification Current CPR certification Valid Arizona driver's license (for incumbents assigned to multiple work sites) Experience/Skills Experience in laboratory techniques and phlebotomy (except for those assigned to Continental Family Medical Clinic - which has laboratory facility and staff) Ability to work under stressful situations in the clinical setting. Demonstrated clinical competencies per clinical competency checklist/review Demonstrated customer service orientation (for interactions with patients, families, and UCHC colleagues) Demonstrated oral and written communication skills Experience with diverse work forces and customer populations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Medical Assistant may spend a great deal of their professional day walking, standing, moving and manipulating equipment, as well as lifting and moving objects, and supplies. It is reasonable to anticipate lifting 20-25 pounds in any given day. Lifting up to 40-50 pounds may occasionally be required, depending on the specific style or type of care provided. In the performance of certain patient car tasks, the Medical Assistant may be expected to have sufficient manual dexterity in order to safely perform various skills and technics. Tasks and expectations may vary by clinical site and medical practice. Medical Assistants may also be expected to have a level of visual and auditory acuity sufficient to meet their needs of their job task. Corrective equipment and devices may enhance the person's ability to achieve the appropriate level of acuity. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of their job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach forward with hands and arms.
