Job Description

SUMMARY OF JOB FUNCTION
The Lead Medical Assistant, under the direction of the Clinic Manager, Nurse Practitioner, performs various patient care activities, administrative duties, and other duties related to the operation of a School Health Clinic activities. The Lead Medical Assistant assists in planning and participates in training and orientation of current and new staff members. Must be able to use good judgment in carrying out job tasks and be sensitive to the School Health Clinics needs in cooperation with the interdisciplinary team and other school departments; assures the clinics is well organized so that the highest quality of medical care will be provided.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to duties outlined the Lead Medical Assistant will work with the Clinic Manager in developing training updates to all current clinic staff. Will assist with training and orientation of all new-hire Medical Assistants. Assists in training and use of the Ochin Epic Electronic Medical Records System. Participates in special projects as designated by the School Health Clinic Administration. Registers patients for the Health Clinic by determining the presence of a current Parental Consent form and confirming that signature if necessary; and by completing all necessary registration forms. Assures receipt of all insurance information from the patient. Prepares patients to be seen by the Practitioner by locating the correct chart and performing and recording vital signs on each patient. Assists in performing selected tests such as urine testing for HCG, HGB, Protein, Sugar and Blood etc. . Provides simple medical treatment under the supervision of the Practitioner to selected patients that may involve such things as the application of non-sterile compresses, ice, bandages, and charts, when appropriate. Files patients information and forms in patient charts in a timely manner so that files can be easily accessed. Maintains patient chart files organized in predetermined format.. Assists patients in completing necessary documents. Assist with referral tracking, following up with patients for whom the clinic is the PCP. Performs language translation as needed. Collects and checks for accuracy, evaluation and billing data. Enters registrations and visit information into the computer accurately, completely and in a timely manner. Answers Health Clinic telephone, refers calls and takes messages in a sensitive manner. Completes administrative assignments such as typing memos and labels; monthly office ordering of office supplies so that supplies are maintained at a predetermined level; Xeroxing forms and other materials necessary for operation. Attends required team meetings once or twice monthly. May be asked to assist in the orientation of new staff members on an as needed basis. Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all patients seen. Other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or GED. Medical Assistant Certificate from an approved Medical Assistant program as required by the State of California. CPR certified. Three years current clinical experience as a Medical Assistant preferred. Minimum Knowledge and Ability Must have extensive knowledge of the NextGEn Electronic and Medical Records System. Knowledge of or be willing to learn community health and welfare resources. Knowledge of computers and their applications. Knowledge of medical terminology.. Ability to prioritize, organize, and plan job tasks. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and positively in a teamwork environment. Ability to interact in a courteous helpful manner with patients, clients and staff. Ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with patients, co-workers, visitors and callers since many situations involve the provision of sensitive services. Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of impending emergencies and initiate appropriate response. Ability to function, under protocols, with remote supervision when necessary because of small staffs at each location, there is more marked degree of autonomy. Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling medical information. Knowledge of office routing and filing system. Bilingual English/Spanish required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position requires occasional moderate to heavy activity level involving lifting (up to 50 pounds), bending, pushing and pulling. May be exposed to microbial contamination from ill patients. Usual clinic environment with frequent interruptions in work to answer telephones and deal with crises.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Clinic Manager for the School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County; routine clinical duties are supervised by the Nurse Practitioner.
