Assist in the intake and medical screening of new shelter residents; provide basic health assessments, vital signs, and health history documentatio.
Crisis & Safety:
Support crisis intervention and safety protocols; assist in managing medical emergencies until professional care is available.
Health Services Coordination:
Facilitate referrals to local healthcare providers, clinics, and social services; help clients access medications, vaccinations, and preventive care.
Facility Maintenance:
Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic shelter environment; assist in sanitation Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; preferably a medical assistant certification (e.g., CMA, RMA) or related healthcare training. Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably with vulnerable or homeless populations, is strongly preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work in a fast-paced, compassionate environment. Proficiency in basic medical procedures (vital signs, wound care, minor first aid) and record-keeping systems. Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect client privacy. Preferred Qualifications Experience in shelter or community health settings. Knowledge of public health resources and social service networks. Requirements:
Job Requirements Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent) preferred or willingness to obtain certification within an agreed-upon timeframe. Current CPR/BLS certification. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a medical office, clinic, urgent care, community health center, or similar healthcare setting. Basic knowledge of medical terminology, infection control practices, and vital signs. Ability to accurately document services and maintain confidential medical records in accordance with HIPAA. Proficient with basic computer systems and electronic medical records (EMR/EHR). Valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrates compassion, empathy, and professionalism when serving individuals experiencing homelessness. Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and client-centered service. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust across diverse populations. Ability to remain calm during crisis situations and assist with de-escalation when appropriate. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accurate documentation. Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Works effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Maintains strict confidentiality and professional boundaries. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability as client needs and priorities change throughout the day. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to assist clients with limited mobility when appropriate. Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as taking vital signs, preparing medications (if applicable), and completing documentation. Ability to work in a shelter environment that may include exposure to communicable illnesses, strong odors, noise, and emotionally challenging situations. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, or substance use disorders. Experience in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), nonprofit clinic, emergency shelter, or public health setting. Familiarity with motivational interviewing, harm reduction principles, and behavioral health services. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. Experience coordinating care with community healthcare providers and social service agencies.
