Job Summary:

Under general direction, assists the pathologists in preparing and grossing anatomical specimens for routine histology testing and staining.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

+ Assigns priorities and batches of the specimens. + Trims, labels, processes and preserves specimens. + Provides gross dictation of surgical tissue specimens under direct supervision of surgical pathologist. + Reviews gross dictation and slides prior to giving slides to the pathologist. + Disposes of surgical tissue when appropriate. + Prepares and maintains surgical tissues by properly registering accessioning, labeling and ensuring adequate fixation. + Prepares frozen sections by labeling, cutting, staining and preserving the specimens. + Photographs specimens as needed. + Assists the Radiologist and Pathologist in collection of fine needle aspirate specimens. + Assures that working supplies are adequate. + Files, rotates and transfers surgical slides and paraffin blocks. + May perform administrative and clerical duties as needed. + Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. + Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

+ Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on courses in anatomy and physiology or equivalent years of experience and education

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

+ Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs. + Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements. + Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors. + Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc. + Frequent keyboard use/data entry. + Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping. + Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs. + Rare climbing.
