Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Job Description The Medical Assistant supports an Internal Medicine clinic connected to a hospital, providing high-quality, patient-centered care in a busy outpatient setting. This role focuses on rooming patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs and medical histories, assisting providers with exams and point-of-care testing, and coordinating appointments, referrals, and prior authorizations. The Medical Assistant also helps manage phone triage, walk-in patients, and prescription refills while serving as a friendly, professional resource to patients, visitors, and the care team. Responsibilities Room patients efficiently and prepare exam rooms for visits, ensuring a smooth and timely patient flow. Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, weight, height, and BMI, as well as relevant signs, symptoms, and medical history in the electronic medical record (EMR). Assist providers during office exams and procedures, setting up equipment and supplies and supporting miscellaneous clinical tasks as directed. Perform and assist with point-of-care tests such as urinalyses, strep, flu, and pregnancy tests, as well as other tests as ordered by providers and dependent on the specialty practice. Schedule tests, radiology exams, and specialist appointments as requested by providers, and accurately enter all check-in and check-out information into the EMR. Complete prior authorizations as needed and notify the office referral specialist when an insurance referral is required. Update and maintain immunization records and other pertinent patient information in the EMR. Handle phone triage when scheduled, including responding to patient medical questions, communicating test results, processing medication refill requests, and returning patient calls. Fax, call, or electronically transmit prescription refills as directed by providers, ensuring accuracy and compliance with clinic protocols. Support walk-in patient care by performing triage, obtaining blood pressures, conducting urinalyses, managing medication sample requests, and collecting patient history and other relevant information for the provider. Function as a resource to visitors, providers, and staff by greeting everyone promptly and courteously and providing clear, professional communication. Consistently demonstrate and support the organization's mission, values, and commitment to high-quality patient care in all interactions. Perform additional duties as assigned by clinic leadership and providers to support the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the practice. Conduct all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and organizational policies and procedures, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Active CMA (AAMA), RMA, or CCMA certification. Successful completion and graduation from a recognized medical assistant training course or equivalent experience. High school diploma or GED. Demonstrated experience with medical assisting and direct patient care in an outpatient or clinic setting. Ability to room patients, obtain and accurately document vital signs, and collect medical histories. Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) for data entry, appointment scheduling, and clinical documentation. Basic life support (BLS) certification. 2-3 years of experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in a clinical setting. Experience in family medicine, internal medicine, or women's health practices. Experience with point-of-care (POC) testing, including common in-office lab tests. Familiarity with a variety of EMR systems and comfort learning new electronic health record platforms. Experience working in hospital-based or multi-provider clinic environments. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with patients, providers, and team members. Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care and collaborative, team-based practice. Interest in professional growth and long-term career development within a healthcare network. Work Environment Collaborate with a team of two providers and one other Medical Assistant. Our friendly and supportive culture ensures everyone is greeted warmly. The schedule is Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, with no weekend work or holiday shifts. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.22 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
