The medical assistant works in collaboration with nursing colleagues and other personnel to prepare patients and records for procedures to be performed at Specialists Hospital Shreveport. This position is a PRN day shift in our Pre-Admissions department. Essential Job Functions Greeting patients reporting for pre-operative lab work. Data entry of physician lab orders Performs routine tests as ordered by medical professionals. Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient Collect blood samples from patients Practice proper patient identification Label vials with patient names, dates and other required information Perform 12-lead EKG Perform nasal swab tests such as MRSA and/or rapid Covid Provide pre-op surgical instructions to surgery patients Perform patient pre-surgery education related to medication holding as per surgeon/physician orders Centrifuge blood samples Prepare lab specimens for batching and transport Batch & receive labs through computerized interface. Transport specimens to Laboratory from PACU/Inpatient Unit Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients Cleans and restocks department lab areas. Keep your lab room clean and well maintained at all times Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment Perform basic office duties such as making copies and stapling information packets Call patients for basic chart information such as medication lists Performs other duties as assigned which can include: Registers patients for lab work, verifies accuracy of insurance information, collects payments Input all updated patient information into patient profile and lab account. Works directly with patients and their families Prepares patient charts Admit and discharge each lab account File lab orders for upcoming surgeries Answer phones Maintains as confidential all observed or acquired information regarding the patient, the patient's history, surgical procedure, and perioperative experience. Maintains inter-staff communication as confidential. Assists in the collection of data for continuing quality improvement. Ensures waiting area is kept neat and tidy. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent Completion of a medical assistant program or equivalent experience. Medical assistant certification/license is required through one of the following organizations: NHA
  • National Healthcare Association AAMA
  • American Association of Medical Assistants ARMA
  • American Registry of Medical Assistants Solid computer skills with EMR system Medical terminology knowledge is a must Experience is preferred but not required.
Physically able to perform CPR. Able to maintain extensive standing and bending Able to lift a minimum of 15# of equipment.
