Medical Assistant Job Description The Medical Assistant plays a critical role in supporting a busy specialty practice by creating an efficient patient flow and a welcoming, compassionate environment. In this role, you perform both administrative and clinical duties, including maintaining accurate patient records, preparing patients and exam rooms, and assisting Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers with examinations and bone marrow biopsies. You manage daily schedules, complete timely documentation in the electronic health record, and use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure patients receive professional, timely, and compassionate care during a challenging season of their lives. Responsibilities Record patients' medical history, vital signs, and test results accurately in the electronic medical record. Prepare treatment and examination rooms before each visit, ensuring they remain neat, clean, and fully stocked. Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, and height. Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for evaluation by the Physician or Advanced Practice Provider. Provide medically appropriate instructions to patients under the direction of a Physician or Advanced Practice Provider. Ensure all relevant patient information and documentation are complete and available in the electronic record before the appointment. Support back-office documentation, including prescription refills, lab requests, FMLA forms, referral paperwork, prior authorizations, and disability paperwork. Assist Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers with exams and bone marrow biopsies as needed. Schedule new and follow-up appointments using EMR and scheduling software to maintain smooth patient flow. Collaborate closely with other medical assistants and ancillary staff to coordinate patient care and clinic operations. Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, providers, and coworkers by following established standards, procedures, and legal regulations. Use strong computer and EMR skills to document care, manage orders, and support clinical workflows. Maintain strict patient confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism. Manage multiple changing priorities in an organized, efficient manner while maintaining composure in high-stress situations. Demonstrate a compassionate, patient-centered approach to care, especially for individuals experiencing complex or chronic health conditions. Essential Skills GED or high school diploma required. At least 2 years of Medical Assistant experience, including back-office documentation such as prescription refills, lab requests, FMLA forms, referral paperwork, and related administrative tasks. Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR) and electronic health records (EHR); Epic experience preferred. Strong computer skills with the ability to work efficiently in medical software and scheduling systems. Solid knowledge of medical terminology and common office medical procedures and treatments. Understanding of insurance and managed care operations, including use of EMR and scheduling software. Demonstrated ability to measure and document vital signs, including blood pressure, weight, and height. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, providers, and colleagues.
