The OB/GYN Medical Assistant is responsible for providing direct patient care, assisting in the office setting with OB/GYN-specific procedures, and performing clinical, administrative, and environmental duties. This role requires knowledge and skill in OB/GYN patient care, including prenatal care, gynecological procedures, and assisting the physician during exams and minor surgeries. •Previous experience in an OBGYN or healthcare setting highly preferred. Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Confidentiality:
Obtain patient consent for care and ensure patient confidentiality at all times. Gather and document comprehensive health histories, chief complaints, vital signs, and health risk factors, focusing on OB/GYN-specific concerns such as menstrual history, pregnancies, and reproductive health. Assess disease conditions, provide patient education, and ensure all clinical care is aligned with current OB/GYN practice guidelines, standards of care, and applicable federal/state laws and regulations. Administrative Duties:
Manage patient records, including obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information, ensuring all documentation is current and accurately filed. Complete necessary forms/requisitions (e.g., pregnancy-related tests, screenings) and schedule appointments, ensuring that patients receive timely follow-up care. Maintain updated charts for OB/GYN patients, including prenatal visit tracking, gynecological exams, and surgical notes. Environmental Responsibilities:
Prepare exam/procedure rooms for OB/GYN visits, ensuring equipment is sterilized and available. Set up instruments and supplies for OB/GYN procedures such as Pap smears, colposcopies, or ultrasounds. Ensure strict infection control protocols are followed, including cleaning exam rooms and equipment between visits. Restock exam/procedure rooms with necessary supplies, ensuring readiness for all OB/GYN appointments and procedures. Clinical Support:
Take and document vital signs and prepare patients for OB/GYN exams and minor procedures. Administer injections, vaccines (e.g., flu, HPV), and assist with other medication administration under the guidance of the physician. Assist with minor OB/GYN procedures, including setting up trays, assisting with instrument handling, preparing for ultrasounds, and providing post-procedure care. Collect and handle specimens, including urine samples, cervical swabs, and vaginal cultures for testing. Team Collaboration and Coverage:
Provide coverage for other team members in case of absences or peak workload times. Work collaboratively with the OB/GYN team to track and improve patient care processes, outcomes, and quality assurance data, with a focus on both acute and chronic care management (e.g., prenatal care, menopause management). Patient Relations:
Maintain courteous, empathetic, and professional behavior toward all patients, ensuring a positive patient experience. Assist patients with understanding OB/GYN-related care plans, procedures, and education materials, fostering an open and supportive communication environment. Communication and Professionalism:
Maintain open, clear communication with all staff, patients, and physicians, ensuring that all relevant medical information is conveyed accurately and compassionately. Uphold professionalism in verbal and non-verbal interactions, following the chain of command when necessary. Demonstrate emotional control and diplomacy when interacting with patients, family members, and colleagues, especially during sensitive OB/GYN topics. Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required; medical assistant certification preferred. Previous experience in an OBGYN or healthcare setting highly preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, especially in obstetrics and gynecology. Ability to perform basic clinical procedures, including blood draws, urine tests, and vital sign measurement. Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and office equipment. Excellent communication skills, both with patients and the medical team. Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail. Strong organizational and multitasking abilities. Skilled in performing medical assisting tasks, including venipuncture, specimen handling, and assisting with OB/GYN procedures. Tact and diplomacy in handling sensitive patient issues, such as prenatal care, pregnancy loss, or gynecological concerns. Ability to educate and support patients on OB/GYN-related matters, including family planning, contraception, and menopause management. Abilities:
Ability to handle emotionally charged situations with empathy and professionalism. Ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a busy OB/GYN clinic setting. Ability to create a comfortable and supportive environment for patients, especially in sensitive OB/GYN appointments. Equipment Operated:
Standard medical exam and office equipment, including ultrasound machines, speculums, Pap smear kits, and computerized health record systems. Work Environment:
