Part-Time (25hrs / week) Position Summary The Pathology Assistant supports pathologists in the preparation, examination, and processing of surgical specimens and autopsies. This role performs gross examination and dissection of specimens, assists with autopsy procedures, ensures accurate specimen documentation, and maintains compliance with hospital, laboratory, and regulatory standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform gross examination, description, and dissection of surgical pathology specimens according to established protocols. Select and submit tissue sections for histologic processing. Assist pathologists with complex surgical specimens and consultations. Photograph specimens and maintain detailed gross descriptions. Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and chain of custody. Prepare and maintain pathology reports, records, and databases. Assist with frozen section procedures and intraoperative consultations. Maintain laboratory equipment and work areas according to safety and infection-control standards. Comply with all applicable regulations, including those established by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, College of American Pathologists, and The Joint Commission. Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities. Train and mentor laboratory staff, students, or residents as assigned. Required Qualifications Master's degree preferred (not necessary) from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program. Knowledge of surgical pathology techniques, anatomy, histology, and laboratory procedures. Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a healthcare environment. Preferred Qualifications One to three years of pathology assistant experience preferred (not necessary) in a hospital or academic medical center. Experience with complex surgical specimens. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and digital pathology platforms. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift and transport specimens and equipment up to 20 pounds. Manual dexterity required for specimen dissection and laboratory procedures. Ability to work with biological materials and chemical reagents while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
