Organization Summary Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region provides a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians providing patient-centered eye expertise in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. Whether a patient is visiting us for a routine visit, to treat a common eye condition or has a more serious eye disorder, we endeavor to provide the highest standard of comprehensive eye care services with excellence and compassion that will consistently exceed expectations. Position Summary:
Medical Assistants are primarily responsible for medically and administratively supporting providers; preparing exam rooms, escorting and communicating with patients, performing basic clinical assessments, and accurately documenting patient examinations within the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Greet patient promptly and professionally. Escort patient to exam room(s) and waiting areas throughout their appointment. Perform basic ocular screening and patient history. Respond to patient concerns appropriately. Medically assist provider throughout the patient examination. Document patient chart, including appropriate medical coding for billing. Coordinate special testing needs with ophthalmic technicians and surgical needs with the Patient Care Coordination team. Prepare and distribute all required patient forms, consents and educational materials. Communicate all provider instructions to patients and/or other physician offices as directed including, but not limited to, faxing reports, letters, post op visits, etc., to referring doctors. Assist provider with patient calls, pharmacy calls, etc., returning all patient phone calls the same day they are received. Prepare injections for nursing staff and physicians. Sterilize equipment and follow legal and proper protocol for disposal of medical instruments and waste to ensure a healthy environment for patients and employees. Use universal precautions and required personal protective equipment with all patient encounters. Clean and prepare examination rooms daily. Travel to and between medical office locations, as directed by management, to ensure patient/provider coverage. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and other healthcare regulations. Support reception and patient care coordination teams, as deemed necessary, by management and/or provider(s). Perform other clinical and administrative duties as needed/assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma/GED or four years' experience in ophthalmology or as a Medical Assistant in lieu of education. Valid NYS driver's license and vehicle to travel to our five locations. Ability to read and understand patient charts and physician instructions. Ability to document patient charts with reasonable spelling accuracy. Software proficiency, specifically with Microsoft products and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) applications. Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with patients, providers, clinical staff, colleagues, managers and others. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. Attentive to patient needs/excellent customer service skills. Ability to work collaboratively with all team members to ensure quality patient care at all times.
Preferred Qualifications:
One year of relevant healthcare experience. Medical Assistant Certification. BLS certification. Familiarity with healthcare, medical, and/or ophthalmic terminology and medical coding.
Work Environment:
Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region is a busy private practice with 11 physicians and five office locations. Employees are frequently engaged in repetitive tasks and are occasionally exposed to biological hazards including, but not limited to, blood borne pathogens and/or or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions. The noise level is usually moderate.
Additional Information:
This position requires work to be performed on-site in one or more of our medical office locations. Ability to travel to and between our office locations is required. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
