Job Title:
Medical Assistant Job Description This Medical Assistant role provides hands-on support to physicians and nurse practitioners in a busy urgent care setting. You will prepare patients and exam rooms, perform vital sign documentation, assist with procedures, and maintain accurate electronic medical records. The position offers the opportunity to work with diverse patient needs, use modern electronic health record systems, and grow within the organization, including potential overtime across different specialties. Responsibilities Document vital signs accurately and consistently for each patient encounter. Prepare patients and examination rooms for exams and procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment in all patient care areas. Provide essential patient care assistance to support the daily activities of physicians and nurse practitioners, including greeting patients, taking vital signs, and preparing examination rooms. Assist physicians with procedures by documenting medical history, case notes, and other relevant clinical information. Relay instructions and care plans from the physician or nurse practitioner to the patient or authorized representative in a clear and professional manner. Collect patient data in person and by phone, accurately documenting patient concerns and symptoms in the electronic medical record. Record messages and care provided in the electronic medical record for physician or nurse practitioner review. Take complete and accurate messages, route them to the appropriate area, and ensure timely follow-up and resolution. Enter orders and referrals, set up cases in the electronic medical record system, and perform basic registration and demographic updates. Accurately document all medical information in patient records in accordance with clinical and regulatory standards. Track and route test results to physicians and nurse practitioners for review and follow-up. Communicate test results to patients when authorized by the physician or nurse practitioner, ensuring clarity and sensitivity. Facilitate patient care activities by scheduling ancillary tests, reinforcing patient education, and performing basic triage as directed by the physician or nurse practitioner. Maintain adequate inventory levels of medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies, and report or restock as needed. Use basic computer skills to work proficiently within the electronic health record while performing daily documentation and communication tasks. Process orders appropriately in the electronic medical record and follow established workflows for patient care and documentation. Support a high-volume urgent care environment by managing time effectively and prioritizing tasks to ensure efficient patient flow. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience working as a Medical Assistant. Proficiency in documenting vital signs and basic clinical measurements. Experience preparing patients and exam rooms for examinations and procedures. Ability to assist physicians and nurse practitioners during procedures, including documenting medical history and case notes. Strong skills in collecting patient information in person and by phone and accurately recording patient concerns. Proficiency with electronic medical records and electronic health record systems. Ability to enter orders, referrals, and cases into an electronic medical record and update patient demographics. Skill in tracking and routing test results to providers and communicating results to patients when appropriate. Competence in scheduling ancillary tests and supporting patient education and basic triage under provider direction. Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment. Basic computer skills sufficient to perform daily documentation and communication tasks in an electronic health record. Experience working in a fast-paced medical setting, such as urgent care or similar high-volume environment. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and message taking. Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, and staff. Demonstrated commitment to patient care, professionalism, and teamwork. Additional Skills & Qualifications Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential is beneficial. Experience with phlebotomy and patient care procedures is an advantage. Familiarity with urgent care workflows and managing a high daily patient volume. Ability to work overtime and support different specialties when needed. Interest in professional growth and development within the organization. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy clinical setting. Comfort working with electronic health record systems and adapting to new technologies. Work Environment This role is based in a busy urgent care setting that typically sees 50 to 100 patients per day. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility to work until 6:00 p.m. as needed. You will work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical staff in a fast-paced environment that requires efficient patient flow and consistent communication. The position involves regular use of electronic medical record and electronic health record systems, as well as routine handling of medical and office supplies. The clinical environment emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and safety for both patients and staff. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Middletown, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
