Job Description
The primary responsibilities of the Medical Assistant (MA) will be to provide first aid care to children, schedule appointments with specialists, coordinate vision and hearing screenings for each child, and schedule transportation for children to off campus appointments. The MA will ensure all children with referrals have secured appointments within a reasonable date while still in care. The MA will communicate with the LVN or Lead Medical Coordinator about the medical needs and progress of the child, and secure medical care for children in emergency cases, if recommended by the primary care physician. He/She is also responsible for maintaining compliance with established licensing regulatory agencies, and federal standards requirements. This is a full-time position and is required to work at a childcare facility under the supervision of the LVN, or Designee. The MA will be required to maintain a flexible, organized, and efficient work schedule and is subject to work extended hours, weekends, and be on call including evenings, weekends, and holidays for all program related issues/emergencies.
Essential Duties:
Provide first aid care to children, including child service referrals, scheduling appointments with specialists, coordinating vision and hearing screenings for each child, and coordinate transportation to children to their off-campus appointments. Ensure all children referred by other program departments are provided with follow-up appointments with the licensed medical provider. Communicate with the LVN or Lead Medica Coordinator about the medical needs and progress of the child, and secure medical care for children in emergency cases, if recommended by the primary care physician. Maintain compliance with established licensing regulatory agencies, and federal standards requirements. Responsible for interviewing children and documenting medical/personal information in the child's medical charts. Provide administration of medication for each child and document after administration. Work closely with the LVN to ensure all medications are administered in accordance with the prescribing physician's instructions. Maintain current on all medication training, including dispensing, side effects, documentation, check for cheeking or pocketing, proper storage, etc. Immediately notify the LVN of any concerns regarding the child or the administered medication. Ensure all dispensed medications are properly logged, and maintain ongoing pill counts to ensure medication administration records are accurate. Assist with coordinating, maintaining, and updating the medication management system to allow for the administration of medication to child in accordance with DFPS, ORR, and DHHS requirements. Communicate all children and staff concerns regarding medication side effects to the LVN, who will communicate with the primary physician to obtain further guidance and recommendations. Maintain all medication records and update refill requests for all medications prior to leaving their shift. Maintain certification in CPR. The MA will report potential health and safety hazards to the Lead Medical Coordinator. Adhere to scheduled hours pertaining to position, remain available for on-call scheduling, and work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed, requested, or deemed appropriate. Know and recognize the signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and sexually provocative behavior and implement professional response, reporting and documenting procedures. Work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers, professionals, and children. Work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining control and professional composure at all times and making decisions based on the needs of the program and service population. May assist with Fire and Active Shooter drills. May assist with keeping inventory. Maintain professional and ethical standards as prescribed by Hands of Healing and ORR. Maintain confidentiality in all areas of staff, children, and program operations. Must demonstrate competency, prudent judgment, and self-control in the presence of children and when performing assigned responsibilities. Role model as a professional always. Showing compassion for others; responding appropriately to the emotional response of children and staff; demonstrating respect for others; demonstrating a calm, compassionate, and helpful demeanor toward those in need; being supportive and understanding, especially while in HOH uniform. Attend all organizational required training that will enhance professional growth in the Medical Department with pre-approval from Program Director or Designee. Continually seek opportunities for professional growth and development. Attend all departmental and program meetings to ensure that up-to-date information is received, and/or information of policy changes or practice are adhered to. Must have the ability to accompany Agency as needed during an evacuation because of hurricane, severe weather, fire, natural disaster, terrorist activity, disease outbreak, or any other reason that necessitates an evacuation to some other location. Able to travel if needed for training or conferences, when deemed necessary. Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hiring. At least two years of relevant work experience in the medical field preferred. Registered Medical Assistant Certification (RMA/CMA) preferred. Must be current on medical practices, issues, trends, and be able to coordinate problem-solving strategies to meet the medical needs of children in care. Must be computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft windows (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, adapt to changes to meet the needs of the unit. Must have a clear background to be employed in a childcare facility. Must have clear Tuberculosis test results. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing (English/Spanish). Must be eligible to drive as required by the position to facilitate program services. Must be approved by ORR. Subject to random drug screening. Physical Demands:
Must be able to obtain and perform Emergency Behavior Intervention Training (EBI)/ Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and First Aid (CPR). Must be prepared and physically able to respond with appropriate protocol in a variety of dynamic supervision situations with children 0-17 years in age. In a sudden or emergency event, staff must be at all times physically able to run, jump, lunge, twist, push, pull, apply HOH approved restraint techniques, and otherwise manage or coerce the full weight of an adolescent. All staff must be physically and mentally able to manage children who become uncooperative, sick, violent, or display any other form of harmful or threating behavior. Bending, stooping, and lifting to 25lbs required to complete daily tasks. Must be prepared to administer emergency First Aid, CPR, or EBI/CPI techniques of children, regardless of the time of day or hour of the staff's shift, the size of the child, or the staff's level of personal fatigue. All staff must be able to maintain clarity of thought throughout the entirety of a shift and be able to respond quickly to duress or circumstances requiring immediate action. Work Environment:
Work is at a youth care facility at which children receive multiple services. Work shifts are subject to change. Noise levels vary from mild to moderate. May be required to use personal protective equipment to prevent potential communicable diseases; working indoor or outdoor in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions; exposure to hazards.
