Correctional Facility Position Title:
Medical Assistant (MA)
Schedule:
40 Hours per
Week Shift:
Monday•Friday, 8:00 AM•4:30 PM Position Summary The Medical Assistant (MA) provides clinical and administrative support services within a correctional healthcare environment. Working under the direction of licensed nursing staff and healthcare providers, the Medical Assistant assists in delivering quality patient care to an incarcerated population while maintaining safety, security, and confidentiality standards. The ideal candidate demonstrates professionalism, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a structured and secure environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist healthcare providers with patient examinations, treatments, and procedures. Obtain and document patient vital signs, medical histories, and health information. Prepare examination and treatment areas and ensure proper sanitation and infection control practices. Perform specimen collection, point-of-care testing, and other clinical procedures within scope of practice. Administer medications and treatments as permitted by state regulations and facility policies. Maintain accurate and timely medical records in electronic and/or paper health record systems. Schedule patient appointments and coordinate healthcare services as directed. Monitor and stock medical supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals. Assist with intake screenings, health assessments, and chronic care clinics. Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and assist healthcare staff during emergency situations. Adhere to all correctional facility security procedures and protocols. Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and facility regulations. Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, correctional officers, and other interdisciplinary team members. Perform other duties as assigned to support facility healthcare operations.
Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or GED. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program. Current Medical Assistant certification or registration as required by state regulations. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Minimum one (1) year of clinical experience as a
Medical Assistant Preferred:
Previous correctional, behavioral health, public health, or community health experience. Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR). Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and infection control practices. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and work effectively with diverse patient populations. Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Ability to remain calm and professional during emergencies and stressful situations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care while maintaining security awareness. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and sit for extended periods. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds. Ability to respond quickly to medical emergencies and perform patient care duties throughout the facility. Benefits Consistent Monday-Friday schedule..
