Job Description

Medical Director Longleaf Lodge Position Title:
Medical Director Program Information:
Longleaf Lodge is part of the Longleaf Recovery and Wellness network, dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based addiction treatment in Alabama. Nestled in Sterrett, AL, the facility offers a healing environment designed to support patients through every stage of recovery - from acute medical detoxification through clinically managed residential treatment. Our programs are built on ASAM Criteria, trauma-informed principles, and a genuine commitment to person-centered, equity-focused care. As a newly established program, this is a rare opportunity to shape the clinical vision of a growing organization from day one.
Position Summary:
The Medical Director provides clinical and administrative leadership across Longleaf Lodge's full SUD continuum - a 10-bed ASAM Level 3.7 Medical Detoxification unit and a 50-bed ASAM Level 3.5 Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential program. This physician holds ultimate accountability for patient safety, clinical quality, and the medical culture of the organization. This position is ideal for a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine with meaningful addiction medicine experience who is ready to lead. This position may be filled on either a full-time or part-time basis. Compensation as a 1099 independent contractor (part-time or full-time) may be considered; however, W-2 employment is strongly preferred. The schedule for this position is Monday- Friday and includes one working weekend a month.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as physician of record for all detox and residential patients Manage acute withdrawal syndromes using CIWA-Ar, COWS, and PAWSS protocols Prescribe and oversee MAT (buprenorphine, naltrexone, methadone referrals) Directly supervise and collaborate with 2 Advanced Practice Providers (NPs/PAs) Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and clinical rounds Serve as designated Medical Director for ADMH, TJC, and CARF surveys Provide weekend coverage one weekend per month (telehealth or in-person) Collaborate with senior leadership on strategy and program development Ensure compliance with
APMP, 42 CFR
Part 2, HIPAA, and DEA regulations Promote trauma-informed, person-centered, recovery-oriented care culture
Qualifications:
Required:
MD or DO from an accredited institution Current, unrestricted Alabama medical license (or ability to obtain prior to start) Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine (ABIM) or Family Medicine (ABFM) Current DEA registration with Schedule II-V prescribing authority Minimum 3 years of clinical experience in SUD, addiction medicine, or closely related field Experience supervising Advanced Practice Providers (NPs and/or PAs) Current
BLS/ACLS
certification
Preferred:
Addiction Medicine board certification or significant experience in addiction medicine Prior experience in inpatient detoxification or residential SUD settings Familiarity with ASAM Levels of Care 3.5 and 3.7 Experience with TJC, CARF, or state behavioral health regulatory surveys The above job description is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of duties and standards of the position.
